Although the fortress held only seven prisoners, its fall became a symbol of the end of absolutism and the beginning of a new era that would transform France and much of Europe. Years later, the monarchy would be abolished, and Louis XVI would ultimately be executed.

, on July 13, 1174, King William I of Scotland, known as William the Lion, was captured at the Battle of Alnwick.

While attempting to capitalize on a rebellion against Henry II of England, William was ambushed by a small group of English knights and taken prisoner. His capture put an end to the invasion of England and forced him to recognize Henry II’s supremacy through the Treaty of Falaise, shifting the balance of power between the two kingdoms for years to come.
