The DESCEND Act requires persons on commercial, for-hire, and private recreational vessels to have a venting tool or descending device rigged and ready to use when fishing for reef fish species in Gulf of Mexico federal waters.

How many fish do you catch in a year? Well, probably too many to count for sure! I bet one or many of them were experiencing barotrauma after being caught and you may or may have not noticed.
So what do you do in these cases?
If you do nothing else, make sure you have Safe Release Weight on hand and a heavy duty pole. These two items can be used to help fish suffering from barotrauma reach natural habit faster than venting or simply throwing the fish back in the water. Returning fish back to natural habit faster using the Safe Release Weight will help decrease the negative impacts of baratrauma, ultimately leading to high survival rates in the fish that are being released back into the water. The more fish we help survive after catch and release, the more fishing we can continue doing!
