Last spring, a man came in the shop, and we started talking about community support. He had noticed our little food pantry by the front door. He wanted to know about the challenges people face living in Carbondale; what were the struggles and successes I saw in my town.

I told him about the Giving Tree I do every October, and how much it means to me personally to support literacy in every way I can. He loved the idea so much, he pulled a $100 out of his pocket and handed it to me. He told me to put it toward the next giveaway and get some books for kids with it. I tucked it away in the cash drawer with a note, and today, that hundred added a bunch more titles to my purchased pile.

I don't know where he was from or his name, but to the guy who gave cash freely to support books for children~ Thank you for caring for and supporting this project and this town. And to everyone who has donated so far, you are a living embodiment of the fact that we are at our greatest when we care for the least among us.

It's my FAVORITE time of the year...Fall Giving Tree!! Every fall for 5 years now, White River Books has hosted a book donation for local kids. This year, an awesome group of middle and high schoolers from Stepping Stones sent a list of books they'd like to read.

Let's fill their requests! Come by the shop, purchase a title, and we will get the books to the kids in November. If you don't live locally, call 970.340.4503, or message me here, and we can set up a purchase for you.

This event warms me to my toes because Carbondale is always so unbelievably generous!
