Big News for Our Market at the Plaza!

We’re proud to share that our Board President, Chris Hartsook, has been honored with the Outstanding Cooperative Director award from the Illinois Cooperative Council.

The award was presented at our March 10 board meeting by Kristin Terry from the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, who has worked alongside us throughout the planning process and grant application.

In recognizing Chris, Kristin shared:
“Chris has gone above and beyond… taking on much of the behind-the-scenes work necessary to bring this project to life. From navigating the complex grant process to coordinating with partners and stakeholders, his dedication has been instrumental in moving the project forward.”

Because of leadership like Chris’s, the vision of a community-owned grocery store in Carlinville is becoming a reality—one that will serve our community for years to come.

Progress continues! Every step in construction brings us closer to opening day. There’s still plenty of work ahead, but it’s great to see a big milestone checked off—the building’s electrical service has now been upgraded to power Our Market at the Plaza!

We truly share in everyone’s excitement about the new store—and we understand the big question on many minds: When will it open?

Our volunteer board has been working diligently behind the scenes to move Our Market at the Plaza forward as quickly and responsibly as possible. Receiving the State grant was a major milestone, but it also required additional documentation and clarification to officially certify the project. Now that certification is complete, we’ve continued making steady progress.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been preparing the building, finalizing design plans, purchasing equipment, selecting our grocery wholesaler, coordinating a power upgrade, and completing many other important steps to set the store up for success.

We’re also excited to have recently welcomed our new General Manager, Brad Walker. With more than 30 years of grocery industry experience, Brad will play a key role as we move into construction, inventory purchasing, hiring staff, installing software systems, and completing the many details that come together before opening day. His leadership is a tremendous asset to the project.

Our goal is to open later this year. Once construction is underway and timelines are finalized, we’ll be able to share a specific opening date.
