Turn up the sound! Water boils at about 203° F, and gilding tools are right at about 200°. Since ancient times, bookbinders have used “the sizzle test” to bring hot stamping tools down to temp without new-fangled devices.

Most of my shop passes my “Hogarth Test.”*

*Virginia Woolf would be at home using them.
