Can the digital meter movements read swr with only one slug on a bird platform? check out the video and see!

Yes they can. Only with one caveat. You need to reverse the elements direction to complete the capture. If your equipment is temperature stable then it will work like a dream. If your equipment climbs as transmission time increases the initial capture will always be the most accurate and accuracy will decrease all future keys because the initial forward power capture doesn't climb while the reflected power measurement does which introduces inaccuracies with extended swr monitoring. A simple rule of thumb is to just repeat the measurement if you want absolute accuracy with a correct initial forward power capture every time.

How much does it really cost?

The first step in considering the cost of a keydown truck is the base vehicle cost. This can range between $3k-$70k. Based off of various factors, including but not limited to, age/condition of the vehicle, level of restoration, and trim package.

Next is performance upgrades. These can range from $500 all the way up to $75,000+ depending on how much horsepower and torque is necessary to compete in the classes you're in. In some of the largest classes a stock motor would stall and fail during the competition.

Lastly, the RF aspect of converting your vehicle into a competition truck can widely range on cost based off of your level of knowledge, involvement in the build, and desired class you wish to compete in. Depending on the previously mentioned factors, this can range anywhere from $2k - $20k (class dependent) if you do all the work and research yourself or as high as $110k for the biggest class if you pay for professional help.

All in all you can have yourself a keydown truck for as low as $5500 doing all the work yourself and competing in the smaller classes. However, if you want to compete with the big boys in the highest level of competition, you could spend $255k+ if you don't do the work yourself and pay for professional help every step of the way. This hobby truly has something for everyone at every stage of competition even if you're just spectating on the sidelines or are in it to win it!
