It's a trading company based out of Mike's 13x17 marquee trading tent that he sets up at rendezvous, which are reenactments of the 1800's. Mike's trade consists primarily of scrimshawed powder horns. Powder horns were used in the Eighteenth Century to carry gunpowder for muskets and muzzleloaders. The use of animal horn along with nonferrous metal parts ensured that the powder would not be detonated by sparks during storage and loading. Horn was also naturally waterproof and already hollow inside. Mike creates his powder horns entirely from scratch. It generally takes him about 5 hours to build a raw horn into a beautifully polished horn, and another 20-40 hours to scrimshaw the horn. The horn may be from either a cow or bison. Cow horns can come in various colors, including shades of white, cream, brown, greenish-grey and black. Buffalo horns are ebony black in color. Mike tries to find horns that are appealing and functional whether they are curved left or right handed. He obtains his raw horns from rendezvous, local farmers, and suppliers on the Internet.

Up for consideration is a left-side carry, 10 ½”, on the outside curve, powder horn. This horn has a walnut turned beehive base plug which is airtight and secured by 8 steel nails. The throat is carved and engrailed. There are 2 raised strap rings to secure a lanyard. The tip has octagonal flats, leading to the walnut turned stopper.
On the outside you will find the word “Liberty” engraved with scalloped borders to accent it. On the other side you will find a folk-art style Federal Eagle holding an olive branch and 5 arrow in its talons. The eagle is also holding a banner with the phrase “E Pluribus Unum”. You will also find 5 stars forming a crown above the eagle’s head. This maker’s mark, a bearded crescent moon, as well as my initials and the year created can be found under the eagle.

Up for consideration is this banded powder horn which measures 11” on the outside curve. This is a left side carry horn that has a walnut turned beehive style base plug. It is airtight and secured with 8 steel nails.
The throat is tapered to the carved strap ring followed by 8 octagonal panels at the tip. The horn has 3 bands which are applied and pinned securely.

Up for consideration is a 12”, outside curve powder horn. This horn would be considered a left-side carry although you could carry it on either side. This horn has an airtight walnut turned beehive base plug that is secured by 8 steel nails. The horn has a tapered throat that stops at the octagonal 8 panels at the tip. This horn also has 2 applied rings which are pinned to the horn which adorn the body.

Up for consideration is this 13” horn (on the outside curve) which can be carried on either side. The walnut, beehive base plug is secured by 8 steel nails. This horn is antiqued to a golden brown and has 3 applied horn bands. At the throat there is one raised strap ring. The tip has 8 carved flats.

Up for consideration is a left-side carry 12” (outside curve) powder horn by Mike Roberts. This horn has a stained maple base plug secured by 8 steel nails. It has a carved and engrailed throat.
On the outside you will find the word “LIBERTY” engraved between 2 scalloped borders. On the back side of the horn, you will find an engraved Folk Art Federal Eagle holding an olive branch and 5 arrow. Above the eagle’s head there are 5 stars in a crown like halo. As you turn the horn to the bottom you will find 2 American warships floating above the scallops. This artist’s trade mark - a crescent bearded moon with initials and year made - is also engraved on the horn.

SOLD Up for consideration is a 12 ½” contemporary powder horn created by Mike Roberts. This airtight horn has a cherry, turned, beehive base plug secured with 8 steel nails. The horn is recessed from the octagonal tip to secure you horn strap.
There are many examples of Folk Art engraved throughout the horn. Inspiration for this horn came from examples of original powder horns found in the book, “The Engraved Powder Horn” by Jim Dresslar.
Engraved on this horn is a dog chasing a deer and a federal Eagle – which are inspired by the Tim Tansel, Marquis De Lafayette horn. You will also find a flower and 2 cannons, a folk-art sun and an ornate floral border, dividing the body and the throat of the horn. There is also a scalloped border at the base of the horn. The bearded crescent moon with the artists initials and year created is the maker’s mark. A jute, 40” powder horn strap comes with the horn.

SOLD Up for consideration is an 11” outside curve, fully engraved powderhorn created by Mike Roberts. This right-side carry horn has a walnut turned, domed base plug secured by 8 steel nails. The throat is carved and engrailed with 2 rings to secure your strap. It also has an octagonal flats at the tip.
On the outer face of the horn, you will find a Federal Eagle gripping an olive branch and arrows. Inscribed on the back side is a Thomas Jefferson quote, “Those who would exchange his liberty for security deserve neither liberty nor security.” This horn also has beautiful borders around the base and throat, enclosing the script. The maker’s mark is also engraved in a non-prominent area.

SOLD Up for consideration is a 12” right-side carry, fully engraved powder horn created by Mike Roberts. The tip is paneled with a carved and engrailed throat. The beehive base plug is turned walnut secured by 8 steel nails. On one side is a 3-masted war ship with an inscribed banner reading “Success to America”. On the same side you will also find an American Bald Eagle as well as the maker’s mark.
On the back side of this horn is an angel of death symbol - a winged skull – with a banner inscribed with “Death to Tyrants”.
This horn comes with a 36” jute powder horn strap.
