On This Day in 1967, Jimi Hendrix Changed Rock History at Monterey

On June 18, 1967, Jimi Hendrix delivered one of the most legendary performances in rock history at the Monterey International Pop Festival. Although he had already become a sensation in the United Kingdom, much of America had never seen him perform live. By the end of that night, nobody would ever forget his name.

Backed by Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, Hendrix unleashed a stunning set that included explosive versions of "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," and "The Wind Cries Mary." His combination of virtuoso guitar playing, showmanship, feedback manipulation, and raw energy left audiences in disbelief. Then came the moment that would become one of the most iconic images in rock history. After kneeling before his Stratocaster as if performing a ritual, Hendrix set the instrument on fire and sacrificed it to the crowd before smashing it on the stage.
