Aplets and Cotlets Makers of Fine Fruit & Nut Candies Since 1920!
(323)

The blossom-fresh flavor of crisp Washington apples, the tangy goodness of ripe apricots, and the nutty richness of crunchy English walnuts have made Aplets and Cotlets the Pacific Northwest's most-beloved candy since 1920!

I keep forgetting what a great flavor line-up can be found in our Turkish Delight. We had a damaged shipment returned, and I ate my way through every flavor but one! — The Vanilla & Pistachio is like a nutty vanilla milkshake (if that makes sense!). The Orange Blossom & Almond is quite different from our regular Orange candies... it has a slightly bitter note that pairs well with the sweetness. The Apricot & Walnut is a nice variation on Cotlets, having only apricot purée, pieces, and flavors without the citrus oils and vanilla which give a Cotlet its signature taste. And of course the nut-free Lemon Delight is just like biting into sunshine! — I do not care for flowers in my mouth at all, so the Rose & Pistachio was left for my co-workers who all seem to love it (more of the other flavors for me!) — When I visited Türkiye years ago I was excited to try original Turkish Delight, and was surprised how most everything I tasted was loaded with artificial flavors and color dyes. Our version of this exotic classic candy doesn't have any of that, so I was happy to find out that I could get the best version of Turkish Delight back home!

Today they were packing up bags of Berry Delights. An assortment which includes my favorite candy on earth... Boysenberry & Hazelnut Delights. I was very, very close to creating a big distraction so I could run off with a full box of beautifully-wrapped pieces, but if I did that then we wouldn't have any to fill the bags, and I would be depriving our amazing customers of an opportunity to eat them! One of these days I'm going to create a secret Boysenberry & Hazelnut item so I can buy them whenever I want. And maybe... MAYBE... I would share the secret item number with my Facebook Friends so they could order them too. I wonder if anybody would be interested in that? What am I saying? OF COURSE they would!

Anybody heading to our beautiful little city of Cashmere, Washington this weekend for the Founder's Days celebration? ALL of you? That's great! Can't wait to welcome you to our gift shop where they'll be passing out free candy samples! — It seems only fitting to take a moment to recognize OUR founders... Mark Balaban and Armen Tertsagian. They were, by all accounts, remarkable gentlemen. After working their way across the rugged continent to Seattle, they founded an Armenian restaurant and a yogurt factory... both ahead of their time (can you imagine if we had stuck with yogurt for 65 years when the boom hit in the 80's?). But it wasn't until they crossed the Cascade Mountains to our little "Vale of Cashmere" and founded an apple farm that things really took off. Because just a few years later they had the brilliant idea to blend their excess fruit with a recipe for locoum candies (a favorite from their childhood). The sweets were so popular that they founded our candy company in 1920... and the rest is history! — Not a lot has changed since those early days. We still make our candies in much the same way as Mark and Armen... using quality ingredients to hand-craft Aplets & Cotlets, Fruit Delights, and our delicious other confections. Sure there are easier, faster, and cheaper ways to make candies, but our dedication to the time-tested methods developed on OUR Founder's Day can be tasted in every bite!

Danish farmer spent 25 years creating a giant walkable world map beside Lake Klejtrup 🗺️🇩🇰

Søren Poulsen created the remarkable World Map at Lake Klejtrup between 1944 and 1969, shaping miniature continents from stones, soil and grass. The finished attraction measures approximately 45 by 90 metres.

The ambitious project reportedly began after Poulsen discovered a large stone resembling Denmark’s Jutland peninsula. That unexpected discovery inspired him to recreate the world beside the lake.

Visitors can still walk between its continents today, turning Poulsen’s decades of patient work into one of Denmark’s most unusual family attractions.

Our receptionist wears many hats. In addition to greeting people who visit our office and answering the phone, she's got her fingers in just about everything around here. And honestly? We don't know what we'd do without her! — But her most important job? Keeping the candy jar stocked at her desk for when I walk by. And look what was waiting for me today... Boysenberry & Hazelnut from our Berry Delights assortment! It's like I won the lottery! It's like jam with seeds and nuts, but instead of needing a spoon you can eat it with your fingers!

That moment when they pour the candy out of the cooking kettle so they can add the nuts... and the entire room is filled with the sweet smell of the fruit concentrates and flavors escaping in the steam... well... it's pretty great to be honest! — Today they were cooking Orange & Almond when I was passing through. It smelled as if I had wandered into an orange grove! I was tempted to stick my finger in the mixture and have a taste but... 1) I don't think people want to taste my finger when they bite into our candies... and 2) I would probably be fired for breaking sanitation rules... and 3) I don't like the idea of getting third-degree burns. — The GOOD news is that after 24 hours in the cooler, they can cut the candy into little nuggets of deliciousness so I can enjoy them burn-free!

The factory smells like blueberries! Because they're cooking Blueberry Pomegranate & Almond Orchard Bars today! Which reminded me to grab a handful before the weekend as I head to the great outdoors! It's a delicious burst of energy on the go that won't melt in the Summer heat! — For those of you who like some behind-the-scenes scoop... when I designed this photo for a catalog cover, I sent a sketch to the food stylist & photographer. I told them I wanted it to look like you were hiking on one of Washington State's beautiful forest nature trails. They wrote back and said "There's no forest in our photo studio!" — So what they did was grab a chainsaw and go cut a chunk out of a tree and bring it back to the set so they could make my idea come to life! Then they added some houseplants they had to get some greenery in there. I never did ask where they found the tree it came from. Probably best that I didn't! — My contribution was the rope and carabiner clip that I grabbed at REI on the way to the studio. CLEARLY I had the most difficult task! And, yes, I grabbed all of the Orchard Bars once the photo had been taken so I could eat them on the way back to Cashmere!

Last week I was asked to post photos of the original stove where our candies were first created. Happy to oblige, because it's a beauty! Click on the images to see them full-sized. — Back when we had orchards circa 1918, our founders needed a use for their excess fruit before it would spoil (this was a decade or two before industrial refrigeration was available!). They decided to make a candy they loved from their childhood from back in the Old Country, but using apples they had on-hand to flavor it. Aplets were born! And they were so tasty that a candy business was born in 1920! If you visit us here in Cashmere, Washington, you can see the stove in person in our gift shop. And I'll put a photo of the original kettle in the comments.
