Florida Flame Red Maple (Acer rubrum 'Florida Flame') is a premium native cultivar specifically developed to deliver reliable, vibrant fall color in warmer Southern climates where traditional red maples often struggle. It is highly prized in landscaping for its heat tolerance, fast growth rate, and striking multi-season visual interest.
Key Tree Characteristics
⢠Size & Structure: It typically reaches a mature height of 40 to 60 feet with a canopy spread of 25 to 40 feet. It begins with an upright oval crown when young and matures into a well-rounded shade tree.
⢠Seasonal Foliage:
⢠Spring: New leaves emerge with a bright red tint before transitioning to a lush, glossy green for the summer. Small red flowers also bloom in late winter/early spring before the canopy fills out.
⢠Autumn: Unlike northern varieties that require sharp cold snaps, 'Florida Flame' reliably transforms into brilliant shades of crimson, scarlet, and fiery reddish-bronze even in mild winters.
⢠Growth Rate: Fast-growing, typically putting on 12 to 18 inches of height per year, reaching full structural maturity in 20 to 25 years.
