Jane Goodrich returns to town this Friday for a reading from her new novel, The Seraph, followed by dinner at the Pentagoet Inn. We do love good historic fiction, and this novel is that and more. Jane is also the author of House at Lobster Cove, founder of Saturn Press, builder of Kragsyde on Swan's Island, and among the most fun & creative authors we know! πŸ€—πŸ“š For dinner reservations at 6 pm following the talk, please call the Pentagoet at 326 8616, or stop by the bookstore. 'So, friends....ask the questions that have no answers. Laugh. Be joyful though you have considered the facts....practice resurrection.' -W Berry. 🌷We may have lost Wendell Berry, but his words remain. Look to them now; read them for fortitude and inspiration, read them for the joy they bring.

'...the care of the earth is our most ancient and most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it, and to foster its renewal, is our only legitimate hope.' -W Berry, The Art of the Commonplace πŸŒ·β˜€οΈ

French-Rwandan author and musician Gael Faye has long been a favorite of ours for his ability to carve unity out of wildly disparate musical and cultural traditions, and for the tenderness in his musical & literary storytelling. This second novel is the story of a young man born to a French father and Rwandan mother, who begins to unravel the complexities of his heritage when a young cousin arrives at the family home in Versailles seeking medical treatment for a machete attack sustained during the ongoing genocide in Rwanda. Like much of Faye's creative output, this novel is ultimately about the unbending human capacity for love and endurance, and for the universal longing for safety and acceptance. πŸ“šπŸŒ·

Among our favorite books this summer is this highly readable primer into global money laundering and the systemic vulnerabilities in our financial systems. (It sounds terrifically boring to some, but this is relevant to anyone who banks, shops, invests and saves.) British financier George Cottrell, who served time in US federal prison for wire fraud, and his co-author Lawrence Burke Files, an international finance investigator and due diligence expert, walk readers through the core stages of money laundering and further articulate how and why enforcement and exposure mechanisms lag in their efforts to curb the theft and reallocation of fully 8% of global GDP.

A good flashlight-under-the-covers book is part of any respectable summer evening, and this is just the one! The second in a wonderful middle grade series with a bit of spook and a lot of adventure, this story follows two friends who unravel the mysterious legend of a ghost haunting our peninsula's biggest pond. πŸ“šπŸ˜³.

The Calendar of Wooden Boats has been published annually since 1983. The tradition continues with the just-released 2027 Calendar, still as beautiful (and useful) as it was 44 years ago. 😊. Benjamin Mendlowitz

'For over 75 years, the Downeast Art & Antiques Show has assembled a group of internationally known exhibitors featuring historic 17th century antiques through the highest style 21st Century art and objects.' This year the four-day event takes place here in Castine on the Maine Maritime Academy campus, and we'll be on hand Friday morning for a book signing. πŸ“š Stop in the shop ahead of the event to purchase featured books by Billy Cotton, Gil Schafer, Frederic Magazine and Libby Cameron- there is truly something exquisite for both the novice and the expert at both the show and in each of these gorgeous books. πŸŒ·β˜€οΈ.

'The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer like the highest seat of a ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning......it is curiously silent too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons and sunsets smeared with color....'-N Babbitt.
