Do you know what a Brachiopod fossil is? We have some here at that you can come and see on one of our tours. They are mineralized shells of small bottom-dwelling marine animals that first appeared over 500 million years ago. They have a top shell and a bottom shell with one being bigger than the other making it easier to tell the difference between them and a clam. They use a special ring of tentacles called a lophophore to catch their food in the cold, deep, modern oceans bottom floors today even though most of the species died out during the Permian Extinction.
They do date back to the Cambrian period and were the most common shelled sea animals for 300 million years making them rank as some of the most frequently found fossils in rock layers around the world, helping scientists figure our the age of different rock layers.

Come on over for a tour filled with information about fossils, minerals, formations, and just in general lots of fun and laughter. We are open 10am to 6pm CT. If you have a larger group, even school groups, call to see what we can do for a private tour. 270-773-3377

Come check out nature's underground 'popcorn' here at Crystal Onyx Cave! 🍿🔍

While not an uncommon cave formation here in the Mammoth Cave region of Kentucky's many caves, standard cave popcorn is usually a rough, scratchy formation like sandpaper. But these specific clusters featured in our cave are uniquely round, smooth, and glossy! Why they look so different all comes down to ancient water power.

Regular cave popcorn grows on dry walls where water dries up quickly, leaving a very rough, bumpy surface.

Our smooth cave popcorn formed completely underwater inside ancient pools, or under a constant, gentle water splash. Because these formations grew completely wet, the moving water naturally polished and smoothed them over hundreds of years!

Come see if you can spot both textures of cave popcorn for yourself this weekend with us! We are open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. 🪨🔦

This Shark Week, we are celebrating the incredible ancient marine history preserved in our region of Kentucky!

The Mississippian rock layers exposed throughout our cave system tell a 325-million-year-old story of ancient sharks, fossilized teeth, crinoid stems, and horn coral that once thrived in the warm, shallow, prehistoric sea that covered Kentucky.

We are very honored to have hosted the vow renewal of Richard and Kimber Brown last week here at Crystal Onyx Cave.

Crystal Onyx Cave has a long history of hosting wedding ceremonies spanning back decades in our Wedding Chapel Room—a beautiful tradition that we proudly continue to honor and facilitate to this day.

The gorgeous bouquets and floral arrangements were generously provided by The Flower Cave, a wonderful local business located in the downtown district of Cave City, just six minutes away from us! We loved collaborating with them and look forward to partnering on more weddings and celebrations in the future.
