It’s a simple way to live. “Do unto others as you would have done to you.” “Love thy neighbor.” He didn’t say “unless your neighbor is different from you.” I am a Christian. I believe in Jesus Christ. I believe in a gracious and loving God. A forgiving God. Not a God who hates. And I’m simply fed up with messages of hate, injustice, and suppression hiding behind the term “Christian.” I’m a Christian. And I refuse to believe that legislation like what was passed in Iowa yesterday is what He meant when He asked us to take care of each other. All people deserve the right to a safe life. It’s not just for the straight, the white, the wealthy, the men. It’s a God-given, basic human right. For every. Single. Human. Praying doesn’t make you a Christian. Your actions. Your words. Those are what will be judged at the pearly gates. If there’s anything positive here, it’s that it shows me who the helpers are. Who the true Christians are. And I take comfort in knowing that I’ll have some pretty good company on Judgment Day.

Oh hey there! 👋🏻 It’s been a minute so I thought I’d share a little life update. On Tuesday I began a “new” adventure at Veridian Credit Union as a marketing specialist. Those of you who have known me for a long time, know that I worked at Veridian 15 years ago and resigned to be a SAHM when my oldest was born. It’s been absolutely surreal to return to a company so many years down the road…and to so many familiar faces. The relationships I built over a decade ago have picked right back up where they left off, and it truly feels like family. I survived my first week and even my first work-from-home day today. My brain is at max capacity from absorbing all this new and exciting information, and I couldn’t be more excited about what the future holds. It means a much different future for Hatchlings & Hens CF as I won’t have as much time for pet projects. But it also means a much more secure future for our family…and it feels so good to know I’m helping build that nest egg. Cheers to holding your breath and taking the leap…and to saying yes when you feel called…even when it feels really scary and really hard. Because you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. 🫶🏻🎉💪🏻

So thankful for creative outlets in my post-shop era! Delivered a whole bunch of Christmas pillows to Maker's Market for their holiday open house weekend. Such a cute spot! Go check them out…just a 45 min drive from Cedar Falls.🎅🏻

I found out today that we lost a member of the H&H family on Thursday. My dear friend Evelyn passed away at the beautiful age of 97. If you frequented the shop there’s no doubt you would’ve seen one of her adorable crocheted creations. And chances are, you probably bought one. They were a shop favorite.

I met Evelyn at a garage sale in Waterloo when I was doing occasional sales behind the old Simpson Furniture. She was selling a few of her things that day, and I couldn’t resist. I think I bought nearly everything she had there, and I remember asking for her phone number in case they sold out and I wanted to get more. I tucked that little piece of paper in my wallet, never looking at the name or number she’d written down. Months later when I opened my first shop on State Street, I dug out that paper and called Evelyn, only to discover we lived just a block apart on Rownd Street in Cedar Falls. Her lovable stuffies quickly became a favorite at the shop and we, equally as fast, became friends through the chats we’d have when I’d visit to pick up more inventory. During these visits I learned she and her husband, Jack, owned Winder Sport Shop in Waterloo. Together they built their house where Evelyn lived until the very end. She had five children, 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Known as Grandma Evie, she was an avid gardener, loved Jesus, the Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and anything sweet. When she decided to learn how to crochet, her sister had teased her, saying she’d never be able to do it. One thing I learned quickly about Evelyn was that if you wanted her to do something…you told her she couldn’t. She proved her sister wrong and the rest is history!

While her husband had been so proud of her creations when he was alive, Evelyn never could believe people wanted and PAID for them at my shop. It was just something that kept her fingers busy when she was bored. Something she made to bring joy to her grandchildren. And something that filled her home and brought a smile to my face every time I visited. Oh Evelyn…I hope you truly knew how much joy you brought to so many. You will be missed more than you ever would have known. ❤️❤️❤️
