Book Review: The Powerless Series + 2 Novellas by Lauren Roberts
What an absolutely fantastic series! If there is one thing Lauren Roberts knows how to deliver, it is enemies-to-lovers with an almost unbearable amount of yearning and tension.
Kai and Paedyn had me on edge throughout this entire trilogy. Every time it seemed like they might finally find their way to each other, something stood between them—and so often, that something was duty over desire.
Duty to their kingdom over love.
Love for their families over the love they had for each other.
Responsibility over what they actually wanted.
THE YEARNING. 😭
But this series was so much more than the romance. There were political struggles, betrayals, unexpected twists, loss, sacrifice, and the deaths of characters whose absence genuinely changed the people left behind. The grief and consequences weren’t simply forgotten when the plot moved forward—they shaped the characters and their decisions throughout the rest of the story.
By the final book, I genuinely didn’t know whether I was supposed to feel happy or completely heartbroken. In some ways, we get the ending we’ve spent three books desperately hoping for... while in others, we’re reminded just how much was lost along the way.
And can we talk about the novellas?!
I am usually someone who will skip novellas and side books in a series, but for some reason I decided to read both this time, and I am SO glad I did. They weren’t unnecessary extras at all. They filled in gaps, added context, and gave certain characters and events so much more depth.
The final novella especially hit me hard. Getting to see more of Kit’s journey after everything that happened was incredibly sad, but also beautifully done. It gave his story another layer that made so much sense once everything came together—even if it broke my heart a little more in the process.
And somehow, even after an entire trilogy and two novellas, I still have questions!
Kai and Paedyn’s story may be concluded, but this world certainly doesn’t feel finished. There is so much potential left with the Kits, Mara, and the rest of the universe Lauren Roberts created. Knowing she plans to expand it has
