Another incredible piece of comic book history is back from CGC!

Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963) 🕷️

From the very beginning, we set realistic expectations with our client based on a thorough inspection of the book.

Our prediction:
✅ 1.5 was the most likely outcome.
✅ 1.8 was possible if the page quality held up.
🤞 2.0 would have been a pleasant surprise.

The biggest limiting factor was the brittle page quality. While the cover presented well for the grade, the interior ultimately kept the book where we expected it to land.

Final Grade: CGC 1.5 (Cream to Off-White Pages)

Needless to say, we’re thrilled with the result—and more importantly, so is our client.

One of the biggest values we provide isn’t just pressing and submissions. June 1964 – Amazing Spider-Man #13 (UK Price Variant)
First appearance of Mysterio.

This book came to us with decades of accumulated dirt and debris, along with the natural wear you’d expect from a comic of this age. Because of the fragile condition of the cover and the delicate outer wrap, our approach had to be conservative.

The book underwent an extensive dry cleaning and debris removal using specialized Teflon-coated hand tools designed to safely lift contaminants while minimizing stress on the paper. While every book has its limits, the cleaning helped brighten the cover and improve its overall presentation without compromising its integrity.

The best part of this project wasn’t just the improvement—it was the story behind it. This comic belonged to a member of our client’s family, making it far more than just a collectible. Our goal was to help preserve that piece of family history and prepare it for grading, so it can be protected and enjoyed for generations to come.

Sometimes this process isn’t about making a book look new—it’s about giving it the care it deserves while respecting its history.

Lately we’ve been seeing a lot more Pokémon and Marvel submissions, and every card that comes through our shop goes through the same process before it’s ever packaged and shipped.

Grading isn’t just about filling out paperwork—it’s about making informed decisions.

A little progress update on this Amazing Spider-Man #6 (UK Variant).

Tonight was all about the pre-work. I was able to get the major folded areas squared away and gave the book a light once-over with cotton rounds to remove some of the surface dirt.

Then, under the raking light, I noticed something I hadn’t seen before… it looks like someone used this book as a coffee coaster at some point. 😂 You can clearly see a cup ring near the bottom of the cover.

That’s where I’m calling it for the night.

Since I introduced a small amount of moisture and used the tacking iron to reset those folds, the book is going to stay in a cold press while I’m away. Sometimes the hardest part of cleaning and pressing is knowing when to stop and let the paper do the work.

The transformation already is pretty dramatic. It’s amazing what happens when one folded piece of paper is returned to where it belongs. The cover presents so much better already, and we’re just getting started.

Amazing Spider-Man #6 (UK Variant) — what an incredible book.

I’m beyond excited to have the opportunity to work on this one for a client.

The pre-work will focus on carefully correcting the numerous folded corners and creases. The front cover has folds along the top edge and spine, and nearly every interior page has some degree of folding that will need individual attention.

There’s also staining on the front cover that we’ll attempt to reduce as gently and safely as possible. Before any work begins, I’ll be giving the book a thorough inspection under UV/black light to check for any previous color touch or restoration.

Aside from the heavy surface soiling, this book has a lot of potential. I’m looking forward to seeing just how much we can improve its presentation while preserving its originality.

Results will have to wait until next week, as I’ll be out of town for a few days. Thanks for following along—I can’t wait to share the before-and-after photos!

Coming up next on the block we have Amazing Spider man #6 and Daredevil #1. These books were brought all the way from the UK, hence the pence variants. We were conservative on the outcomes and grades we would get post clean up but the staples are tight and obvious wear and chipping. The goal here is going to be to straight up a lot of these bends and folded corners on the interior wraps. Obvious dirt and grime. These books are hydrated, maybe overly hydrated due to sitting in an attic for many years. They should clean up nice

One of the coolest projects to come through the shop!

Amazing Spider-Man #1 (March 1963)

This incredible book was discovered in a box at an estate sale. The owner found us through CGC’s dealer directory and trusted us to clean, press, and prepare it for grading.

For a book of this age, there are some really encouraging qualities. The interior wraps are beautiful, the back cover is still attached by one staple, and it cleaned up surprisingly well. I was also able to bring the corners back to life with a little pre work.. While there is significant cover chipping, I feel like we gave this book the best opportunity to present as well as it possibly can.

Our hope is for a CGC 1.5, and we’d be thrilled if it reached a 1.8. Personally, I do believe it’s stronger than a 1.0, but that’s ultimately up to the grading room. I did prepare the client from 1-1.5 to be conservative

No matter the final grade, it’s always an honor to work on books with this much history. Helping preserve pieces like this for future generations is one of the best parts of what we do.

Something that definitely aged well!
Dan was on the come up and the customer is a huge black cat fan so I’m sure it’s a PC book. Nonetheless, amazing story looking back on today’s market
