Blackwing has done it again…
A beautiful collection…
Volume 143 featuring Frida Kahlo.

“On September 17, 1925, a bus collided with a trolley car in Mexico City. Among the injured passengers was 18-year-old Frida Kahlo. The accident left her bedridden for months. With a mirror suspended above her bed, Frida began to paint what she could see: herself.

Looking inward became a defining theme of Frida’s work. Through her celebrated self-portraits, she explored identity, pain, and passion using bold, vibrant colors to express her inner world. Her work honored Mexican and indigenous cultures while offering an unflinching examination of physical pain, emotional struggle, and the women’s experience.”

Volume 143 is a tribute to Frida Kahlo. Each pencil features soft graphite and a floral design inspired by Frida’s iconic imagery. The model number 143 is a nod to the 143 paintings commonly attributed to her over the course of her life.”

Mother Nature dumped so much damn rain on us that our basement flooded.

And we’re definitely not alone.

Thankfully, our neighbor Nick Jelenik called me early this morning and said I might want to check the basement at Scribe NewBo because his basement at Parlor City was flooded up to his knees.

(Thank you for the call, Nick. THAT is what neighboring businesses looking out for one another looks like!)

I raced downtown and, sure enough, the water was already several inches deep and still pouring in from a corner of the basement.

My amazing landlord, Sue, and her hubby, Jim, came down right away. Along with another neighbor, Marty Hoeger, they got pumps going and started pumping out the water.

I cannot thank them enough.

Then Heather and her hubby, Jason, showed up with fans, squeegee thingys, extension cords and everything else you apparently need when your basement decides to become an indoor swimming pool.

And they ALL stayed for hours.

They cleared out wet boxes, moved merchandise high onto shelves, wet-vacuumed the basement and did everything they could to get us ahead of the water.

Then Katie came in to work today and promptly added “Sump Pump Patrol” to her job description, keeping a close eye on everything all afternoon.

And apparently Mother Nature isn’t finished with us yet, because there’s MORE rain in the forecast next week. 🙄

But mostly, today I just feel incredibly thankful.

Next week, my incredible team from all three stores has already signed up to help put the basement back together.
Because that’s the kind of kick-ass group of women they are. They see something that needs to be done, and they DO it.

And honestly, that’s what today has been about.
Neighbors helping neighbors.
Friends showing up with pumps and fans and squeegee thingys.
People seeing someone who needs help and saying, “I’m here.”

So let’s all pray for some dry days ahead, because I know there are a LOT of homeowners and businesses dealing with this same mess right now.

And because I apparently cannot end a basement-flooding post without product placement…

How can it be Back to School already?
Where did the summer go?
Wait…it’s mid-August already?
I know I’m not alone with these feelings…

Nonetheless, this BTS season always reminds me
of the

MOST
IMPORTANT
JOB

on the planet.

Teachers.

Hats off to all of you who have chosen to devote your time and skills (AND PATIENCE) to those who seek knowledge, whatever the age.

None of us would be where we are today without the leadership and guidance of a teacher who taught us how to read, write and … (fill in ALL the things a teacher taught you!! There are too many things to name!)

I’ve had so many wonderful teachers in my life.
And some of the most special did more than just teach.
They recognized a kid from a single-parent home who needed a little more understanding. A little more time.
Because often times, the daily lesson plan isn’t what makes some of the biggest differences in a child’s education.

It’s noticing.
Noticing the kid getting bullied.
The kid who doesn’t have a lunch.
The kid who hides…

Teaching IS a work of heart…

*****

Here’s to the 2026-2027 School Year…
To the kids, the parents and the Teachers!
(And everyone who supports all of the above!!)

Can we pick favorites?
Because this might be one of our favorite Blackwing Volumes!
Heather and I said that about the last one, too…
but this set is simply more beautiful than we imagined.

From the brand:
“Every day, birds move through our lives unnoticed. They live alongside us in parks, forests, waterways, and neighborhoods, hidden in the rhythm of everyday life.

Birding, or bird watching, is the observation, study, and cataloging of birds in their natural habitats. Even more than that, it’s an exercise in slowing down.

In a world constantly vying for our attention, birding asks us to simply be present. It reminds us there is beauty all around us, waiting to be discovered.

Volume 458 is our tribute to birding. Each balanced graphite pencil features a gradient finish inspired by one of four North American birds: the Clark’s Grebe, Mallard, Green Jay, and Black Rail. The model number 458, the estimated number of migratory bird species that regularly travel through the United States and Canada, is stamped on each pencil in black foil. Each 12-pack of pencils comes with four designs, three pencils of each design.”

A beautiful message, too.
Be present.
We just love that.

The Blackwing Volume 458 is
available at both Scribe locations.

Hours this weekend (both shops):
Saturday: 10-5
Sunday: 12-4
