COPD is not one disease. It is an umbrella over three: chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and a form of asthma that does not respond well to the usual treatments.

Ryan Anthony, BS, RRT, walks through what each one does to your lungs, the symptoms worth tracking, the risk factors you can control, and how the four stages get classified.

September is Healthy Aging Month, and understanding what you are managing is where managing it starts.

How to check your oxygen purity:

Here is something rarely discussed with patients: a concentrator set to 2 liters per minute could be delivering a much lower purity than you expect, and there is not much you would notice at first.

Our guide covers how to ask your supplier for a purity assessment, why cleaning the gross particle filter protects your output, when a unit needs to go back to the manufacturer, and what to weigh if you are considering a home analyzer.

Dry nose or throat from your oxygen?

If you are on oxygen for more than a few hours a day, a dry nose, throat, or mouth is a familiar complaint. It happens because oxygen through a cannula bypasses the way your body normally humidifies the air you breathe.

Things that help: a humidifier bottle filled with distilled water, saline spray a few times a day, a room humidifier while you sleep, staying hydrated, and a well-fitting cannula replaced monthly.

One caution: skip petroleum-based products like Vaseline around oxygen, and use water-based options instead.

Being on supplemental oxygen does not mean exercise is off the table. Avoiding movement is what starts the cycle of deconditioning, and gentle activity is how you break it.

Kristina's newest piece covers walking in short intervals with breathing breaks, chair yoga, Tai Chi, sit-to-stands, and resistance bands you can use while seated. She also covers a simple breathing rule: inhale before the movement, exhale during the hardest part.

Use your oxygen exactly as prescribed, and talk with your doctor before changing your flow for activity.

Oxygen is not flammable, but it does feed a fire.

A common misconception worth clearing up: oxygen itself is not flammable. It supports combustion, which means it lets other things ignite more easily and burn hotter.

That is why a candle, a gas burner, or a lit cigarette becomes far more dangerous near oxygen equipment. Our room-by-room guide covers concentrator clearance in the bedroom, keeping tubing off walking paths in the living room, the kitchen and bathroom rules, and what everyone in the household needs to know, visitors included.

Is your concentrator actually working?

It is one of the most common questions we hear: how do I know my concentrator is actually giving me what my prescription says?

Kristina Diaz, RRT, walks through five checks you can do yourself. Read the panel and indicator lights. Hold the cannula near your cheek to confirm airflow. Look over the tubing for kinks or cracks. Take a pulse oximeter reading at rest at your prescribed setting. And pay attention to how you feel, because new fatigue or shortness of breath is worth a phone call.

One thing she is firm about: if you suspect a problem, let your supplier measure the output rather than adjusting the settings yourself.

Labor Day weekend is close enough to start packing. The Inogen Rove 6 weighs 4.8 lbs, is FAA approved for flights, and runs up to 12 hours 45 minutes on setting 1 with the extended battery. If a trip is on your calendar, let's make sure your oxygen is ready for it.

Call 866-245-2349 to talk it through with an Oxygen Specialist.

September is Healthy Aging Month, and the oxygen users we talk to are rarely sitting still. They are planting fall bulbs with a grandchild, going back to a class they quit years ago, picking the guitar back up. Oxygen therapy should support that life, not shrink it.

If your current setup is keeping you inside, it may simply be the wrong equipment. We're always happy to help you figure out what fits how you actually spend your days.

Tomorrow marks the first day of National Preparedness Month, and for anyone on oxygen, a power outage is not an inconvenience. It is a plan you should already have.

Four things worth doing this week:

1. Call your utility and ask to be added to their medical needs registry.
2. Keep at least one spare battery charged, and rotate it so it does not sit dead in a drawer.
3. Get the DC cable that runs your portable off a car outlet. Your car becomes a charging station.
4. Write your equipment model numbers on a card and keep it in your wallet.
