Topsoil testing is more than just sending dirt to a lab.
BioSys completed a field sampling and visual evaluation protocol for a large commercial topsoil stockpile intended for grass establishment.
This project included:
✅ Two separate topsoil windrows
✅ 10 representative sampling lots
✅ 40 inspection holes
✅ Composite samples collected for lab testing
✅ Field documentation of soil color, structure, vegetation, clods, roots, moisture, and visible organic matter
One pile showed a lighter brown, cloddier pasture-origin material with Johnson grass growth. The second pile showed a darker chocolate-brown color, visible aggregation, stronger organic matter character, and lambsquarters growing through the stockpile.
The lab work will help verify key topsoil requirements such as pH, sand/silt/clay percentages, organic matter, and fertility for turf establishment. The field visual documentation helps capture what the lab cannot fully show — things like clods, roots, w**d pressure, color differences, structure, and possible subsoil pockets.
At BioSys, we look at soil as a living land system — not just a material to move from one place to another.
Better soil testing. Better field documentation. Better establishment decisions.
