What's New With Michael Kors this Holiday Season?
One of the most anticipated fragrances in recent years has been released just in time for the holidays. Wonderlust by Michael Kors was introduced with an advertising campaign featuring supermodel Lily Aldridge.
The early reviews of Wonderlust are very positive; this is a very feminine fragrance that evokes the fresh scent of a cool ocean breeze. Lily Aldridge was chosen to represent this perfume due to her background as a beach swimwear model who grew up in California.
For Michael Kors, Wonderlust is a natural progression in his celebrated career as a fashion designer. His earliest designs were strictly for women who felt comfortable wearing chic and elegant attire, the kind associated with stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. The brand would later relax its designs to make them a bit more casual and sporty; this is when it started to gain widespread attention.
Michael Kors has come a long way since his brand and business almost suffered complete financial failure in the early 1990s. After his auspicious start in New York, Kors fell into bankruptcy and was forced to take up a job with a French design house. From 1997 to 2003, Kors received accolades for his work at Celine, where his ready-to-wear attire and accessories featured an American sensibility that resonated with fashionable European women.
A New American Fashion Classic
By the time Kors returned to designing under his own brand, he extended his catalog to include menswear. In 2004, he split his brand into three major lines: MK, Michael and KORS. This is when actresses such as Kate Hudson, Olivia Wilde and Jennifer Lawrence started paying attention to his collections, which are released through his boutiques in Beverly Hills, Chicago, New York, and Palm Beach. His designs these days are similar to Tommy Hilfiger's in the sense that they are sporty and comfortable, but they are far more stylish.
The Michael Kors brand is synonymous with luxury that appeals to people of all ages and lifestyles. When pop stars Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lopez started wearing his garments and carrying his handbags, Michael Kors became a household name in the United States; however, his shining moment would arrive in 2008 when Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States, was photographed wearing one of his black sleeveless dresses.
The fact that First Lady Michelle Obama chose to wear Michael Kors for her official White House portrait was not lost on the fashion world. The First Lady explained that the dress was comfortable yet formal enough to wear at the White House; it had the simple elegance of a Chanel cocktail dress with a more sober flair. In 2015, Michelle Obama would once again wear Michael Kors as President Barack Obama delivered one of his final State of the Union addresses.
Michael Kors has taken his success in stride. He is currently focused on supporting charitable endeavors to ease hunger in Third World countries. He also enjoys spending free time at the beach; this inspired him to design the Wonderlust fragrance, which can be found at the Michael Kors Store at Woodbury Common Premium Outlet in New York.
