Beretta 686 Black Onyx in 12 gauge. This shotgun came in for cleaning and service. This shotgun has never been serviced and it definitely was time. The shotgun was completely disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated. The firing pins were replaced along with the firing pin springs, hammer struts, top lever spring, ejector spring, cocking foot springs, sear springs, and inertia block springs. The top lever latch spring was also replaced. When we went to remove the butt stock the GraCoil system was extremely hard to take off. When shotguns come in with recoil reduction systems, I service them as well. The first thing I found was the GraCoil was improperly installed and the spring body was heavily scored on the inside. I replaced the entire spring body and parts, as the old one was not repairable. Then I properly installed the GraCoil into the stock, after some wood modifications. The shotgun was test fired for safety and reliability.

A very nice Beretta 686 in 12 gauge. This shotgun came in with the complaint of a very stiff safety and it being hard to open. The safety was definitely stiff and I corrected that by giving the spring arms a more gradual through. Now the safety is working like it should. The other complaint I looked at was the hard opening, what I found was a burr in the left hand locking bolt recess. This was smoothed out. The combination of the burr and the safety reset trying to push a very stiff safety, likely contributed to the hard opening.

Haven’t posted in a while, so here are some shotguns that came across my work bench.

Franchi Legend in 12 gauge. This shotgun came in with a bent rib. The rib was evaluated to make sure not posts were loose. Then I used by rib tool and straightened it.

A Beretta 694 in 12 gauge. This shotgun came in with the complaint of a stuck top lever. The suspicion was a broken top lever spring, but I was not convinced that was the issue. The shotgun was disassembled and sure enough it was not the spring. The issue was the top lever itself. The 680 series has one lug on the top lever that mates to the top lever pin and it’s held together by a screw. With the 694 they mill a cross into the top lever, giving you for tiny lugs that mate up with the top lever pin and a screw holds them together.

When I took it apart the retaining screw was tight, so nothing there, but when I took out the screw the top lever popped right out and all four of the lugs were sheared of with only two being there, the others I suspect were lost. Since the retaining screw was tight and nothing else appeared wrong and knowing how this customer babies her shotgun, there’s no foul on the part of the customer.

It is my belief that the change in how the top lever is machined, is too much stress on the four tiny lugs to handle the turning stresses that are put on the top lever to open the shotgun.

The new top lever was sourced and the shotgun was function tested and test fired.

A Browning Citori Golden Trap in 12 gauge. This shotgun was sent to me for the suspicion of needing a new locking bolt needing to be fitted..The customer stated that the gun was starting to open upon firing and that the top lever spring was replaced and it still was opening.

When I received the shotgun I tested it for lockup and sure enough it definitely was a worn locking bolt. The customer also opted for me to clean the shotgun while it was in the shop. A new locking bolt was fitted and installed. The shotgun was test fired for function, reliability, and to test the secure lockup of barrels to the receiver.

A very nice Japanese made Weatherby Orion in for cleaning and service. The shotgun was completely disassembled and cleaned. Then the firing pins and their springs were replaced. The shotgun also had the rest of its springs replaced. The test firing was completed for function and reliability.

I must apologize about not posting in awhile, but I’ve been battling ongoing back issues. I’m finally back in the shop pretty much full time now, so work is getting done.

Here is a very nice Perazzi MX 2005 trap in 12 gauge. The shotgun came in with the complaint of not firing on the bottom barrel. The customer just inherited this and is an avid Trap and Perazzi shooter. While it was here he had me clean and do a partial rebuild on it. The shotgun also has release triggers and I serviced them as well.

The culprit turns out to be a very worn bottom barrel firing pin. The replacement parts I use are Giuliani after market parts, because I believe they are superior to factory parts. Most of the springs were replaced as well and the leaf style hammer springs were replaced with their universal springs. I’m a stickler on fit and finish and was not happy with the trigger break on the double releases, so I addressed that issue as well.

The shop will be by appointment only through the rest of the week due to me healing from ongoing back issues. I’m still working on shotguns, but at a limited pace due to my pain levels.

Hopefully soon I will be back to my old self and my normal pace of work. Thank you all for your understanding while I work through this minor bump in the road.
