Blue Missouri Skies Homestead

Blue Missouri Skies Homestead A look into my serendipitous country life:) I’ve decided that in my life there are things that I can do for myself. Now you ask? I would say that and then some.

I remember when my old boss, Linda would see me sweeping the floor at work or cleaning up my area she would say, “Well, aren’t you just a little Susie homemaker.”
At the time, I kinda thought it was silly because I was at work but the point is that at that particular time in my life I wasn’t interested in those things. It wasn’t until I met Jeremy that I got to experience cooking, canning… etc

. Whatever you want can usually come from your own hands. Back then, I wouldn’t have said I was a homemaker at all. I also want to bring back the old ways of things. I know people want efficiency and just don’t have the time but in my life I enjoy the things I can do by myself and it is very satisfying. This blog is about connecting with your past and learning new “old” things. I don’t mean your grandma did it and so on. Everybody has a past that leads to the 1900s or even further back of a simpler time to where you existed to work for your land and your family. That’s what I want. I actually think I was born in the wrong era but I’ll try to make up for it in this one. Join me on my adventures in this homesteading life, through my mistakes and successes but most of all; learning experience of it all.

So today was my very first bulk pick up from Azure Standard. I ordered small this go around just to see if I liked it. I got 25lbs of wheat berries for grinding, ACV with mother, Olive oil, chicory coffee, 2 lbs of butter, turmeric root, and a couple pints of ice cream...

I went by myself, I wasn't a fan of that because Jeremy and I do EVERYTHING together so I felt very awkward without my teammate but I got thru it, made a friend that's been doing it for 10 years so she guided me through the process. I will definitely be doing again.

So along with everything else I don't have time for! I took some time and foraged a little. I'm making chickweed tincture and dandelion tincture and I dehydrated some plantain, purple dead nettle, and yarrow.

Well I haven't done meat birds in a few years but I think now is the opportune time. May can't come soon enough, I'm not a fan of raising these guys, so different from layers in my opinion.

Chicory coffee: Boil 2 cups of water then pull off stove. 3 tsps of chicory, let it steep 30 seconds or more depending on color, then strain into cup, add creamer or whatever you prefer. In my opinion similar taste to dandelion coffee. Just harder to process.

Doesn't look like much, but it was in our field yesterday. I pulled the root of the chicory plant and went thru the tedious task of cleaning, cutting, processing, then drying, and finally roasting. I did this with dandelion a couple years ago so now I'm going to make myself a cup... We shall see.

The other day I was looking/researching plants which is what I do in my spare time (Which these days is non-existent) and I came across something interesting. Surprising to me anyway. I've always been drawn to Mimosa trees, when they are in bloom they are so beautiful, little pink wisps for flowers and they smell amazing. Did you know that the flowers have a medicinal use?
