Future farmers should prioritize honesty, integrity, and respect in all their dealings.

While growth and competition are part of agriculture, success should never come at the expense of neighbors or relationships.

Acting with fairness and trustworthiness builds strong communities and earns lasting respect both on and off the farm.

Tuesdays with Tom 🌾

Small businesses are vital to rural communities because they provide trusted, local service and support. While larger retailers may offer lower prices, local businesses build personal relationships and are readily available to help when problems arise. Supporting these businesses strengthens the community, while losing them weakens the local economy and the connections that keep small towns thriving.

Tuesdays with Tom 🌾
Relationships matter a lot in agriculture, especially in small-town communities.
Business is local, and many times you’re working with people you already know — neighbors, friends, people you see at church, or people you work beside at community events.
That familiarity builds trust. When you’re doing business with someone you know, there’s a reassurance that their word means something.
In agriculture, many agreements are still made with a handshake. It comes down to honesty, integrity, and the belief that “my word is good because I said it was good." We don’t always have to rely on litigation to make things happen.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that trust matters more than expertise alone.

Early in my career, I thought that having the knowledge, experience, and right answers would naturally make people want to work with me. But over time, I’ve learned that expertise may get you into the conversation, but trust is what builds lasting relationships.

Agriculture is deeply personal. When a farmer hires an agronomist or consultant, they’re not just buying a recommendation. They’re inviting someone to become part of their operation.

That requires trust on both sides.

Farmers are independent by nature, and rightfully so. They’ve built their operations through years of hard work, decision-making, and responsibility. For any partnership to truly work, there has to be confidence, respect, and trust in the relationship.

Being local matters.

Farmers want to work with someone who understands their operation, their community, and the challenges they face every day. Local knowledge and accessibility create confidence, and confidence leads to stronger decisions.

Over the years, I’ve learned that agriculture is ultimately a relationship business. The best partnerships go beyond products, recommendations, or transactions. They’re built on honesty, communication, and genuine care for one another’s success.

Many of the farmers I’ve worked with have become friends. I’ve been invited to family celebrations, weddings, baptisms, and important life events. That happens when the relationship becomes bigger than business.

Today, the way I advise clients reflects those lessons. I focus on earning trust, communicating openly, and building long-term partnerships that help create stronger, more successful operations.

Farming is more than a business. It’s stewardship.

I enjoy helping farmers with management decisions because what they do matters. Farmers are responsible for producing our food, managing natural resources, and caring for the land so future generations can continue farming.

That’s a tremendous responsibility, and it often doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.

I’ve always viewed land ownership a little differently. We’re really just stewards of it for a period of time. We take care of it, improve it, and eventually pass it on.

Farmers understand that better than almost anyone. They’re constantly balancing productivity, profitability, and sustainability while working to leave their operation better than they found it.

What I appreciate most about farmers is their work ethic, humility, and commitment to what they do.

Farmers wear countless hats. They are business owners, operators, mechanics, marketers, parents, and community members. Agriculture is not just a job. For many, it’s a way of life that has been passed down through generations.

There is a tremendous amount of pride and responsibility that comes with that.

For me, it’s a privilege to work alongside people who take that responsibility seriously. If I can help them make better decisions, improve profitability, reduce stress, or build a stronger operation for the next generation, that is incredibly rewarding.

At the end of the day, helping the people who feed our communities and care for our natural resources is meaningful work.

That’s what keeps me passionate about what I do.
