A new exhibition opening this week is putting people with disabilities in the spotlight.

“Able in CU” is a project featuring eight charcoal portraits including two self-portraits and six individual portraits by artist Shauri Gonzalez. She said her goal was to celebrate the resilience of people with disabilities.

“Instead of it being a project describing everybody’s struggles, it’s actually describing everybody’s successes and how they keep moving forward within the community, even with disabilities,” Gonzalez explained.

She said she partnered with the Developmental Services Center to find volunteers with a range of disabilities and then interviewed each volunteer to understand how they see themselves and their disability.

Join us for the opening reception of Able in CU, a solo portrait exhibition by local artist Shauri Gonzalez.

Featuring charcoal portraits of individuals with disabilities from the Champaign-Urbana community, this exhibition celebrates identity, resilience, and the importance of disability visibility. Through portraiture and personal storytelling, Able in CU invites visitors to reflect on the many lived experiences that shape our community and encourages meaningful conversations about accessibility, inclusion, and representation.

Meet the artist, view the exhibition, sign the community guest book, and help celebrate the stories that make Champaign-Urbana stronger together.

This event is free and open to the public.

This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency, 40 North | 88 West, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
