Received my Adam Shaw back. It had to be reworked because camel bone handle cracked because of our Phoenix heat.

The finished product. Feels great in the hand. This will be great for whacking large fish when you get them in the boat. Just don't put a hole in the bottom of the boat when you do. What I love about Osage is that after you scorch and lacquer it, it has the awesome 3D look to it.

My first pass with the hole saw and the tomahawk. Osage orange has two types of wood. The outside wood is white. The inner wood is where it gets its name. This piece was almost all heart wood.

My next project is to make an Osage war club made completely from wood. I am trying to maintain as much realism in making it as possible. I am using a tomahawk to shape the handle and a hole saw to form the round head. The biggest reason for my desire for realism, is that I can't afford all the wood working equipment, are you crazy?

I found this almost perfectly round stone. It was just lying in my backyard amidst all the jagged rocks we use as ground cover. Then I wondered, how did it get so round? I mean I'm pretty sure it didn't travel back and forth across the country till it was round. Thought about if for a while and think I have the answer. This stone was stuck in some kind of eddy. Like an underwater tornado in a hole, in a river bottom. How long did it stay there being trapped in it? Being bashed around for a century? A millennium? At some point it became light enough to be ejected from the hole. So I had this extra Osage Orange handle and no head to put on it. So I made this awesome war club. I bounced this stone off the cement, and know lie, it was like bouncing a ball. Osage Orange has a hardness of 2800 on the Janka scale. Its the hardest wood in North America.

This is another great looking Craig Barr Hand Forged Hammer pole hawk Head . It is stamped with a CB under the hammer. Sharp and ready to go. This hawk was made out of 1025 steel. Then a 5160 steel bit was forged into the cutting edge, heat treated it to 58RC.. Over all length is 7 3/8" Long. Blade 2 7/8" wide. Drifted tear drop fits standard or traditional tomahawk handles. This head was chrome plated also. So it can by used as a signal mirror as well as a camp axe. Another beautify Osage Orange haft. Finished off with some synthetic sinew.

One more Craig Barr. Beautiful filing and cut out. The Orange Osage handle came out gorgeous. This one is also made of mild steel with a 5160 bit forged along the edge. Then given a Rockwell hardness of 58.

And here is a beautiful Craig Barr tactical tomahawk. This is a great looking Hand Forged spiked tomahawk (14). Its forged from 5160 steel. It stamped with Craig Barr's mark (CB) on the underside of the spike end. Its been heat treated 58RC.. Over all Head is 8 1/4" Long. Blade is 3 3/8" wide. I chrome plated this and the 3 other heads. These hawks can do double duty as communication mirrors. The haft is made from Osage Orange. This is an extremely hard wood named for the Osage tribe who made their bows from it. Everyone has heard of the legendary English longbows for their hardness and their longevity. Osage is more then twice hard with a Janka scale rating of over 2400 (how many pounds it take to press a ball bearing flush into the wood) compared to English oak, with a mere 1,100 rating on the scale. The hardness of the wood allows for a marginally thinner handle, lowering overall weight without sacrificing strength.

Here is my personal Craig Barr tomahawk. I used a beautifully grained hickory for the handle. Very pleased with how the head set. Hint. You know how to tell if you set your head right? tap the bottom of the handle with a ring. When you hit it, it will sound like you are hitting steel and not wood. Finished it off with some artificial sinew (like it better then the real stuff)
