The Occasional Kanzana Daily Deal!!!

The 1879 edition of O.W. Gray & Son’s “Gray’s Atlas of the United States” offered 16 pages (eight leaves) of supplemental regional maps for Kanas subscribers of the atlas, each with “The Central Portion of Topeka,” and otherwise focused only on the region of the state in which the subscriber resided. Some of the leaves are printed only on one side with a blank verso. The supplemental maps were preceded in the binding with a list of the subscribers in that particular state. To date I have seen at least three variants of this Kansas supplement, though I believe there may have been as many as five. Gray & Son do not appear to have offered this supplement in every state, though did so in at least two others (Virginia and Maryland) in the years 1876 and 1877. It is likely that there were others. I have been unable to find a listing, or even much discussion, regarding these maps. The reference library of The David Rumsey Collection contains the 16 pages with maps of Virginia, and Wonder Books currently is offering a copy of the atlas with a Maryland supplement. The KSHS archives contain three maps from one of the Kansas variants. Each of these maps shows great detail of the town and or town section represented. The Topeka variant includes six maps (labeled “sheets”) on four sides of three leaves. Upon close inspection we find the footprint of every (theoretically) physical structure in the region, with the stated name of about 30-40+% of the structures including private homes. These maps are a wealth of detailed information.

For your consideration for today’s Occasional Kanzana Daily Deal, I am offering the full suite of Topeka Maps including “Southern Part of Topeka” backed with “Eastern Part of Topeka” and “Western Part of Topeka” (two maps on one face of the sheet); “Central Portion of Topeka;” and “North Topeka” with a smaller “Outline Index of the Wards.” The latter maps being on one side each of the sheet and leaving the verso blank. So, in total, there are six maps on four sides of three sheets. Each sheet is double folio in size (approx. 24 x 36 inches in size). All of the images are clean and intact. There are a few small chips on edges. A few of the folds show small closed tears from edges. There is one fold tear on the sheet with printing on both sides that goes into a little longer tear, also closed and not affecting any of the map image. Unless sold, this very rare set of Topeka maps is available for $2000.00 including shipping, for 48 hours after posted. Payment can be arranged by C/C, PayPal, Check, or cash in person. Also, soon to be available will be the supplemental maps of Salina; Clyde Center; Concordia; Beloit and Washington; Atchison; Wetmore and St. Mary’s backed with Muscotah and Netawaka; Minneapolis; Junction City and Manhattan; Sabetha and Seneca backed with Centralia and Frankfort; Blue Rapids and Waterville backed with Clyde. The Occasional Kanzana Daily Deal!!!

In 1875 Wyatt Earp was a police officer in Wichita, Kansas. It had only been incorporated as a town for five years, and its destination for cattle drives from Texas had earned it the nickname “Cowtown.” James R. Mead (the grandfather of our late honorary trustee Schuyler Jones who was the real life model for Indiana Jones… for real!!!) had recently opened his trading post and invested in the town company. Across the river in the town of Delano, Wyatt doubled as a bouncer and, uh promoter of female lust. The streets there were peppered with saloons, brothels, and a lack of any law enforcement. Amazingly, representatives of the John P. Edward publishing company were on site surveying the county of Sedgwick for their “Historical Atlas of Sedgwick County Kansas” published that very year. This incredible atlas is both very significant AND very rare in its original 1875 format. BUT (he said with GC emphasis)… But, today is your opportunity to own that very atlas. There are a few first editions in libraries across the state and country. There are NO records of it appearing at auction in a review of the past one hundred years, and I was unable to find any copies on the private market. The copy I have for sale is listed at the bargain price of only $1000.00! [043363] Edwards, John P. (Compiler). “Historical Atlas of Sedgwick County Kansas [Wichita].” Philadelphia: John P. Edwards, 1882. First Edition. Folio. Half Leather. Fair+ / No Dust Jacket. Acceptable and complete copy of this rare first edition atlas of Sedgewick County Kansas, and Wichita. 61 pages including larger folding map of Wichita. Leather over spine is worn, and covers are holding mainly by the webbing. Leather over corners show less wear. Gold lettering on black pebbled cloth covers is scuffed just a little, but remains bright and clear. The folding map of Wichita shows a five inch closed tear from the bound edge. There is a darkened area near the top inside edge of pages 26 (blank) and 27 (township map) from acidic paper laid in. This darkened area just enters the upper inside corner of the map. There are a couple of stains affecting the township map image on page 58. All maps are otherwise clean and intact. Text block remains tight. The Occasional Kanzana Daily Deal!!!

This is perhaps the single most important reference for anyone doing research into Kansas history… THE most important. This wall of 60 volumes (in 59) can provide stories and detailed information about almost any part of Kansas history that you might have questions about or interest in. Rare to find in its entirety, I have not seen a full set ever listed for sale. The confusing part for people seeking certain volumes, is the name and numbering involved. The Kansas Historical COLLECTIONS were published between 1881 and 1977. Volume 1 and 2 were first published together in 1881, though the content of Volume 1 was complete in 1875. The Kansas State Historical Society began to publish the Kansas Historical QUARTERLIES in 1931, publishing a total of 43 volumes through 1977. BUT, the numbering of the Collections was continued on the Quarterlies along with the volume number of the Quarterly… Confusing? Yep! So for example, Volume 18 of the Collections is also Volume I of the Quarterlies, and so on. Also with this complete set comes a copy of the Comprehensive Index of the publications of the Kansas State Historical Society from 1875 to 1930. Condition is described below, but most of the volumes are Very Good, plus or better. I have listed the complete set for $1500.00, with a $300.00 discount if you pick them up here in Chanute. [043379] Various. Kansas Historical Collections/Quarterlies Volumes 1-60, Plus Cumulative Index (61 Volumes in 60). Topeka: Kansas State Historical Society/Kansas Printing House, First Edition. Cloth - Hard Cover. Good+ (See description) / No Dust Jacket. Complete set of all published volumes of the Kansas Historical Collections, being Volumes 1 (1875) - 60 (1977). Volumes I - XLIII (1-43) of the Quarterlies are the same as volumes 18 (1931) - 60 of the Collections. Also with Comprehensive Index of KSHS Publications from 1875 to 1930, though published in 1959. Volumes 1/2 and 4 are ex-library, though not too bad. The hinges (internal) are broke on Volume 1/2, though text is tight and holding by webbing. Volume 4 also shows a small tear in the gutter of the top cover at spine. Volume 5 with broken hinges also holding by webbing. The remaining volumes are at least Very Good in condition, with most grading as Near Fine. Due to the size and weight of this collection, significant additional fees will apply for Priority and/or International.
