In the mid-2000s, Brooke heard a story on National Public Radio about the impact of colony collapse disorder on bee populations. The story concluded by saying that growth in hobbyist beekeepers would promote diversity, decrease disease, and be a mechanism to combat CCD. Although Shannon Park Farm (SPF) was originally intended for this purpose, in recent years, it has expanded to include woodworking and ceramics.
