We've seen it so many times - a client brings in freshly cleaned coins only to find out that cleaning can actually lower the value, sometimes significantly.

Ron looks for a coin's original surface. Cleaning, even gently, can leave tiny scratches or remove the natural patina that helps determine authenticity and grade. What looks like "restoring" a coin can actually strip away part of what made it valuable.

One of the most common misconceptions we hear is: "It's from 1943, it must be valuable."

Nope. Age alone doesn't determine a coin's value.

What actually matters: mintage numbers, condition, mint marks, and demand among collectors. A coin from decades ago might be worth face value or melt value, while a coin from just a few years back could be worth significantly more if it's rare or in exceptional condition.

Not every valuable piece looks the part right away. Sometimes it's a coin that's been sitting in a box for years, easy to overlook if you don't know what you're looking at.

This 2021 Mexico Libertad, a full kilo of .999 silver, graded MS70 First Strike, is a great example. A perfect grade like this is rare, and it's the kind of piece that can be worth significantly more than its melt value once graded and authenticated.

Ron has spent 30+ years learning to spot pieces like this, and he pays fairly for them, whether the seller knew what they had or not.

It's easy to assume a collection is only worth something if it looks impressive, shiny, ornate, or obviously old. Often the opposite is true. Some of the most valuable pieces are easy to overlook if you don't know what you're looking for.
