A true pioneer in education whose legacy continues to inspire, Marva Collins was born in 1936 in Monroeville, Alabama. Through her work, she transformed the lives of countless underprivileged children by proving that with love, dedication, and the right approach, every child could learn and excel, regardless of their background.

After substituting for 14 years, Marva Collins founded Westside Preparatory School in 1975 on the 2nd floor of her home, with six students (two of her own). Her school would grow to over 200 students and operated for over thirty years. By 1980, Collins was being considered for Secretary of Education, but stated she would decline the position, as she had done with numerous opportunities to run schools and school districts in Chicago and Los Angeles.

Despite success, Collins never wanted publicity nor awards. Instead, she focused on using her success to train hundreds of thousands of teachers. She received more than forty honorary degrees and in 1982 was honored as one of the Legendary Women of the World. In 2004, Collins would win the National Humanities Medal. Today, we honor the remarkable Marva Collins.

Clarke's wisdom continues to inspire: 'History is not everything, but it is a starting point... It is a clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day.'

Let's remember and celebrate Dr. Clarke's enduring contribution to our understanding of ourselves and our history. His teachings remind us that knowledge of the past is a powerful tool in shaping the future.
