I Love the Smell of Jet Fuel in the Morning

This stained-glass T-shirt quilt is all about airplanes, aviation, patches and years of flying-related memories.

It has a 2-inch solid border, and the back is just as fun as the front. Milie pulled aviation details into the quilting, including images and wording from the shirts.

There is a lot to look at in this quilt.

These four memorial pillows were made from Grandpa’s shirts. They’re intentionally very similar, but not exactly the same.

We distributed the few logos among the different pillows and quilted each one a little differently. Each family member gets something that feels connected to the others while still being their own.

It’s a simple way to use clothing from someone you’ve lost without making every piece identical.

Some T-shirt quilts tell a story very clearly.

We made this quilt for a daughter who had lost her mother to breast cancer.

The T-shirts came from events they had done together, along with events the daughter continued to do after her mother died.

I love the photographs she included of the two of them together. They make the quilt so personal. They add to the story of the quilt.

Sometimes a T-shirt quilt is more than a just a T-shirt quilt. It's a way to remember where you were, what you did and who was there with you.

Balancing T-shirt Colors Is Harder Than It Looks

This original-style T-shirt quilt is almost entirely white, except for a blue, red and yellow T-shirts. That means those colors have to be spread throughout the quilt so one area doesn’t feel too heavy.

Sometimes moving one block fixes one problem and creates three more. In this quilt, I’d probably adjust the red placement if I were doing it again, but overall I really like how it came together.

And this one has a special theme: lifeguarding and swimming.

The Finished National Park T-shirt Quilt - What Do You Think?

Here’s the finished National Park T-shirt quilt we showed while it was being quilted.

Every T-shirt represents a different National Park, and we added a 4-inch pieced border using pieces cut from those same T-shirts. That means the border matches the quilt instead of introducing unrelated fabric.

If you’ve been collecting National Park T-shirts from your travels, we can turn them into a quilt like this.

Another breast cancer T-shirt quilt for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This quilt was made as a demonstration quilt. I used Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure T-shirts because, well, I am a woman.

What I have always loved about this quilt is the color combination. Yeah, you expect the pink. But adding the soft green gives the quilt so much more life and keeps the pink from becoming overwhelming.

And that large pink ribbon in the center? It stands out and pulls the whole quilt together.
