Folks routinely ask me where do you fly fish around Statesville (i.e. why a fly shop here???) Well, the easy answer is anywhere there is water. But, of course, NC's Inland Sea (aka Lake Norman) is an obvious answer. Just ask Marty Moose. A trophy (another one) from our local fishery, this morning. The secret fly? I am not authorized to post a photo...but I can release the info that it is quietly referred to as a GMG... Galloping Moose Gurgler.

It's hard to resist a chance to terrorize some smallies with only a few weekends left before temps start to get too chilly. The crew met early (yawn) on Sunday. After a morning strategy session, we launched raft, kayak and canoe on the New in Grayson County VA, and headed downriver. Weather was great but river level was about 1.7 on the Jefferson gauge....so a tad low, but very clear, and expectations were high. Alas, the smallmouths did not share our level of enthusiasm. Everyone caught fish on topwater and soft plastics....but perhaps not the numbers we expected for fish feeding for winter. But....next weekend.....

Five anglers set "sail" on the New, for a seven hour tour... Three kayaks, a canoe and a solo pontoon. About 8am, 20 minutes after launch, the first storm moved through...and then it cleared. The water level was about 1.7 on the Jefferson gauge...a little scratchy in some spots....but the river stayed clear all day...and only one other storm while we were on the water. Fishing was good, not great for Sept....but ok. Topwater bugs and soft plastics seemed to be the key....
