Happy Monday, everyone!

We hope to have some new items for the shop later this week - the fellas are busy with the finishing touches and last minute whatnots. Any tree lovers here? I thought some of you might enjoy this article about trees and their ability to pull gold right out of the ground. We live in such a fascinating world, don't we?

In the past we have shown you some of the work from our metal artist, Jeff, primarily small desktop copper business card easels and miniature yard tools. Jeff has been putting together some new ideas in the way of large solid copper wall art, dream catchers and sunbursts. Jeff's art is unique in many ways, but especially in the fact that he creates all of his art from copper tubes. Some of his pieces started their life in a crawl space or attic, carrying water to a heat pump or water heater. Jeff uses salvaged tube whenever he can, and begins the painstaking task of hand cutting each tube down the center in order to flatten the copper out into a sheet before beginning each piece. Each individual piece of copper that goes into one of his sculptures, leaves, chains, ropes, dream catcher webs, and the pins used to hold it all together, are handcrafted by him, and start their journey as a copper tube. One of his recent pieces is being featured in our Etsy shop, and would make a fine gift for the art lover in your life. It is a nice size piece of wall art ready to hang, at 27 inches long and almost 12 inches wide. Because it’s solid copper, it will take on a beautiful patina over time, and is suitable for hanging either inside on a wall, or outside in your yard or garden, as it will not rust and needs no maintenance. If you prefer your copper art to remain brilliant and shiny, a small amount of metal polish and a little effort will keep it looking bright for many years to come. Earlier in the month we told you we would be introducing some new styles of folk art expression here at Three Cedars that you hadn’t seen from us in the past. The idea began months ago when we were designing a Fairy Cottage for a customer who also wanted some accessories that matched the small scale of the cottage. We made some small tables, a bench and a wishing well. We started thinking, why not make the accessories on a scale more suited for use on their own, on a mantle, a desk or table?

We’re calling them Day Dreamers, and each should elicit a feeling of relaxation when you look at them. Something to help you take a few minutes of mental solitude during your hectic day, a chance for a brief escape.

The first in the Day Dreamer series is our Wishing Well. A little over 7 inches tall, and 4 inches across the base, it’s the perfect size for a spot on a desk, without dominating the space. All handcrafted, we laid each stone, built the trusses and shingled the roof from natural found oak wood materials around our shop here in North Carolina, and capped the roof ridge with birch bark and moss. We also made the crank that raises and lowers the copper bucket, which has started to develop some beautiful greenish patina. The well is built on a ¼” thick birch plywood base that has been felted to protect whatever it’s sitting on. The sign across the front is hand carved and can be personalized with your name, etc. Whether you put a wish in the bucket and lower it into the well, hoping it will come true, or put a worry in the bucket and lower it, hoping it will help you let it go, it’s harmless fun. And sometimes, we all need to Day Dream a little.

We found this little guy hanging out in a long stretch of old growth walnut wood, so we decided to see if we could coax him out to join our forest family. His name is Marlo and he’s a tall boy, around 23 inches high, 4 inches wide and a little over 2 inches thick. He would be happiest hanging on an interior wall, or on a covered porch/patio. He’s been rubbed with several coats of carnauba wax for luster, but he’s not waterproof and can’t be left outside. We thought he had a Nordic look, so we carved his name under his beard using the Runic Alphabet. Once he’s fitted with the proper hanging hardware on back he’ll be moved to our Etsy shop.
