Congratulations, Professor Metrio! And go Mocs!
The UTC Department of Music is excited to welcome Prof. David Metrio as new Director of Orchestra and Associate Professor of Practice!
David Metrio is a Colombian-American conductor and music educator recognized for his dynamic podium presence and his dedication to high-quality ensemble performance. Beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year, Metrio will not only join the faculty of UTC, he will also serve the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera as Resident Conductor and Creative Director of Education and Engagement.
He is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician, with engagements spanning honor orchestras, festivals, orchestral adjudications, and educational presentations throughout the United States.
Metrio has built a reputation for leading ensembles to performances of distinction, with consistent invitations to prominent national conferences and stages such as Carnegie Hall, The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the American String Teachers Association National Orchestra Festival, and the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference. His ensembles have also been recognized nationally through the Mark of Excellence/National Orchestra Honors project.
His conducting studies include work with Miguel Harth-Bedoya through The Conducting Institute, as well as study with Andrew Kim of the Berkshire Symphony. He has further participated in workshops and masterclasses with Marin Alsop, Donald Schleicher, and Carl Topilow.
Metrio remains active nationally as a conductor, clinician, and presenter, continuing to engage with ensembles and audiences across a wide range of musical settings.
