When I was first learning about the history of our home, and after having read that the Goodwin family was its first occupants of note, I ventured down to Chelsea Heights Cemetery (about a mile away) to see if there were any of those family members buried there. I was stunned to see the large number of stones that spanned the short time interval between 1854 and 1865. For one young Goodwin family member, Annie, it was nothing less than an unrelenting era of tragedy! She lived through each sorrow and wept before every grave.

Now we walk down that same path that she trod so long ago to pay our respect to her family members. 💙

For the next few posts I will be reading as Annie Goodwin's voice from her "journal". Though the journal, itself, is a fabrication, all the events mentioned in it are real news taken from our local, Kennebec Valley newspapers from 165 years ago. These will be embellished with Annie's commentaries, sometimes with references to other characters from my novel. I'm posting this first reading in the second week of July, 2025 and will using news from the second week of July, 1860. Hope you enjoy it!😎

The Kean-Goodwin bible, which I acquired in a miraculous fashion and describe in my Preface, played an important role in my writing of "The Ways of Heaven." Tucked within its pages are a number of family artifacts, some of which are pictured in the novel.

Those pictured below are 4 fragments of clothing and one piece of silk ribbon (top right). Though they may seem like ragged strips of junk, they are the final momentos of loved ones, cut from the hems of their garments and placed reverently in "The Good Book".

The four articles of clothing are, likely, from the four individuals inscribed on the "Family Deaths" page of the Bible: Isabelle Kean (daughter, who died at 18), Sarah Goodwin (Annie's mom), James Kean (grandfather) and Mrs. (Isabelle) Kean...Annie's maternal grandmother. The ribbon could have adorned the hair of any of the ladies......................,.....................................
