Summer fishing in the Smokies is still going strong, but this time of year where and when you fish makes all the difference.

Higher-elevation water continues to be our first choice. The upper reaches of the park are offering colder water, active trout, and some excellent opportunities to chase wild rainbows and native Southern Appalachian brook trout.

On the larger, lower-elevation rivers, get an early start. Fish the mornings and keep a thermometer with you. If water temperatures start pushing into the upper 60s, it’s time to move higher or call it a day. Protecting these wild fish during the hottest part of summer is more important than catching one more trout.

The biggest key is stealth. Summer water can be extremely clear. Stay low, watch your shadow, keep false casting to a minimum and make the first cast count.

And don’t overlook the brook trout water. August is one of our favorite times to climb into the high country and chase one of the most beautiful wild trout in the Southern Appalachians.
