A curious little lilac byproduct of cold distillation. This is a beautiful byproduct of lilac enfleurage. An aqueous extrait, in the true sense of a hydrosol, it is the portion of lilac absolute that has been dissolved in alcohol and water. In the extraction process a fraction of the oil is lost in alcohol. As the alcohol evaporates in the extraction process, this portion evaporates with it. We continually capture and recapture the perfumer’s alcohol used in the extraction and recycle it on the next batch. It starts out as 190 proof but after the floral water has mixed in it, the alcohol percentage may drop down and the water percentage may rise slightly, leaving something like 189 proof in the catchment flask. Reusing this perfumer’s alcohol over and over will gradually concentrate the aqueous scent molecules in the alcohol. What I’ve done here is stop the evaporation process before all the alcohol has evaporated off. There will be two fractions visible in the final product, I used to centrifuge the aqueous solution and discard or spray it all over my clothes or towels or curtains, before realizing others might want to experience it too. So after each run I will make a little bit of lilac hydrosol available worldwide.

On my first visit to China in 2010 I had the great fortune to be able to visit the historical home of Lao Tsu. An astonishingly beautiful spot for meditation in the quiet gardens. I wandered through the many standing stones carved with words from the master philosopher and thinker. Among them was this, one of my favorites…Powerful ideas and formidable non-action providing no resistance, only flow. This is a hard human lesson, but once understood, is phenomenal in application.
