If a big pile of homegrown pumpkins and squash on your front step sounds like a good fall plan — we’ve got your plants. 🎃

Both pumpkins and squash are available now at the Cherry Greenhouse.

Here’s what to know for growing them in our northern Minnesota climate:

Pumpkins:
• Give them full sun and lots of space — these vines like to roam
• Soil warmth matters more than air temp; mulch helps hold heat through our cool nights
• Deep, consistent watering at the base (not overhead) once fruit sets

Squash:
• Summer squash comes in fast — winter squash needs the full season, so don’t wait
• Raised beds warm up faster and give squash the heat boost they need up here
• Check in on your plants weekly — squash rewards a little attention with a lot of output

• Plant in partial shade (morning sun is best)
• Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy
• Add mulch to help retain moisture and protect roots
• Use an acid-loving fertilizer if needed
