Fall vibes are in the air on the Iron Range!

As August winds down and the Iron Range air finally cools, it’s the perfect time to give your flower beds some love before winter sets in.

Cooler temps mean less stress on plants and roots — making late summer and early fall the ideal window to prep your beds for next spring.

Here’s what to do now:
• Clear out spent annuals and tired summer growth
• Loosen and amend your soil while it’s still workable
• Add perennials! Fall planting lets roots establish before the ground freezes, so you’ll get stronger, earlier blooms come spring.

🌱 August is a great time to plant!

August is actually a great time to add new color and get those plants established before winter.

Some great August perennial choices include:

• Coneflower
• Black-eyed Susan
• Coreopsis
• Shasta Daisy
• Russian Sage
• Sedum
• Daylilies
• Yarrow
• Hellebores

Plant now, keep them watered while they get established, and you’ll be rewarded with an even fuller flower bed next year.

Coleus: Your Fall Color Secret Weapon

While summer annuals fade, coleus is just getting started. Grown for its foliage, it brings rich burgundy, chartreuse, and fiery orange-red leaves that get more vivid as temps cool. No waiting on frost for fall color.

Why it works here: thrives in Zone 3’s shorter, cooler September days, fills gaps left by spent annuals, and pairs perfectly with mums and ornamental kale.

Bring pots in before the first hard frost, pinch back leggy stems, and check the tag for sun needs.

They can even be overwintered successfully!

🌱 Now’s the Time to Plant Perennials, Iron Range!

Late summer into early fall is actually one of the best windows for planting perennials here in Zone 3.

The soil is still warm from the summer sun, giving roots time to establish before the ground freezes — and cooler air temps mean less stress on new plantings than the heat of July.

A few Zone 3 favorites to get in the ground now:

• Peonies and hydrangea — for that classic, hardy, comes-back-every-year color
• Hostas — thrive in shade and just keep spreading
• Black-Eyed Susans — tough as nails and pollinator favorites
