Bit chilly this morning, but the aster is still going strong ❄️

An easy way to not have to worry about the leaves is to create a soft landing area under the trees. Instead of your trees being islands surrounded by grass, put a bed under them.

Less lawn to mow for you, more habitat for them. Win-win.

The leaves in NE OH are beautiful right now, but the next good wind is going to blow most of them down...

I know most of you have heard "Leave the Leaves" many times already this year, but it's a good reminder, especially for our friends and neighbors who haven't bought into it yet. And as with most things, I don't think there needs to be a "purity test" to go along with it.

If you rake the leaves off the grass into a bed or the woods or just into a dedicated pile on the edge of the yard, you're not a failure. If your neighbor rakes once to get most of them, but then mulches the stragglers next week, don't judge them too harshly. We all do what we can, and any positive step is progress, no matter how small the scale. πŸ‚

Nearly everything has finished blooming, but just because they're done serving the pollinators, doesn't mean the job is complete.

Many flowers serve another purpose long after their beauty fades, as the birds will forage on the seeds in the fall, and often, throughout the winter. Though they may not have the same flashy colors, the seed heads provide a new layer of interest, as well as life-sustaining energy on snowy days.

So although you may be tempted to go out with clippers and chop all the spent stalks to the ground, the birds would appreciate it if you hold off until spring. And if they happen to miss a few seeds, you may just end up with some free plants come summer 🌻

Aster season is bittersweet - one last hurrah before winter, but beautiful nonetheless πŸ‚

Hard to argue that this isn't prettier than a buzz-cut lawn.

Friendly reminder that fall migration is in full swing. While the guys aren't as colorful as when they stopped by in the spring, they're still out there!

Remember to keep your outdoor lights to a minimum for the next few weeks, and if you want to be even more hands-on, consider planting a few native berry-producing shrubs. The birds travel long and hard, so the daily pit stops to refuel are critical! 🐦

More examples from the nursery today about why we do this.

I watched a viceroy butterfly circle the black willows and found at least four eggs that she laid.

Just before that, I came across a tiger swallowtail caterpillar on one of the potted tulip trees (tulip is one of the primary host plants for the Eastern tiger swallowtail) - most of the leaves were pretty well eaten on that tree, but they'll grow back, and we got a cool caterpillar (and hopefully butterfly) as a result.

Remember that when we're adding native plants, it's not just for the aesthetics, but to provide food, shelter, and habitat for the many creatures that inhabit our neighborhoods πŸ›

Some more love for the purples and blues today, since there's so much white and yellow out there right now! Blue mistflower, purple giant hyssop, blue lobelia, and anise hyssop.
