Jaymar-Ruby was founded in Chicago in 1915, and moved to Michigan City, Indiana (my home for several years) in 1922. In 1957, the Jaymar-Ruby company launched the SansABelt pants, which were rather revolutionary at the time in that they didn't require a belt to stay up well. In 1967, the company became a subsidiary of the Hart Schaffner Marx Company out of Chicago, known for high quality men's dress wear. The company's founder, Jack Ruby is remembered fondly in the area as one of few employers who was able to keep *every* employee on the payroll throughout the Great Depression. Jack Ruby passed away in 1985, but the company was passed to his son Burton (Bud) Ruby, the inventor of the SansABelt Slacks, in 1957. The pants gained notoriety for their ads on the late-night Johnny Carson show and were said to be a favorite of Mr. Carson himself.
Jaymar-Ruby closed in 2009, and Bud Ruby passed away in 2014, but much like his father, his legacy lives on in local lore as an innovative and philanthropic man who sent his employees Christmas and anniversary cards.

As you know, the environment is at the forefront of what I do here at Nine Brains. Part of encouraging a circular economy is recognizing the impact businesses like mine have on the environment, and that is why I donate trees through One Tree Planted and carbon offset my shipping with ecocart.
Recently a friend of mine shared this local initiative, and I wanted to share it because they're currently fundraising for a book about this very subject! Please check it out and donate if you can, or pre order their book, or pass it on! 🌎🤝🌎

Carbon Neutral Indiana's mission is for Indiana to become carbon neutral as soon as possible. We're starting with households, businesses, and academic institutions. Along the way, we're sparking a leadership movement and reinvigorating public service.

Vintage clothing myths:

1. It's all polyester.
Yes, a good portion of certain eras is indeed polyester; but rayon, silk, and cotton are also common fabrics.

2. It's lower quality.
Often, vintage clothing has nicer details than modern clothing! Many vintage pieces were hand sewn, by real women, as evidenced by their union tags. These pieces have tailored details you simply do not find in today's factory machine produced clothing, such as elbow joint seams.

3. It's dirty.
Most vintage resellers take the time to restore pieces, and clean them. While it can indeed take some time for an item to lose the age smell if it has gone unworn for a very long time, care is taken to send customers clean and ready to wear pieces.

4. They're not returnable if they don't fit.
While vintage clothing requires a knowledge of your body measurements due to the differences in tagged sizes then vs now, some resellers will allow returns. Check your favorite shop's policy before making a purchase. Nine Brains Vintage includes measurements on listings, and is always an email away to assist in making sure an item will fit. And we DO have a return policy.

Can you think of any more myths?

Something new for the markets....
I've been pretty stumped on how to price stuff at the markets. My octopus shaped tags were cute but they were demolished after my first market, so I didn't use them my second because many of them were missing. I am opposed to marking the clothes with holes or adhesive dots or anything else that could alter the item, so I came up with these color coded tags to hang on the hangers! I'm a big fan of whole numbers, so there's one color per increment of ten, up to $100. Always looking for ways to improve your experience. ✨
