As kids head back to school, Bill recently joined NBC4 Washington to share a different way to think about one of the most ordinary foods in the lunchbox: the carrot stick!

Because sometimes eating better isn’t about changing WHAT we eat - it’s about changing HOW we prepare it.

Using one simple, traditional technique - fermentation - we can transform that everyday carrot into something more flavorful, longer-lasting, and a whole lot more interesting for the lunchbox.

And we were especially excited that the stars of Bill’s segment were the absolutely gorgeous, colorful carrots grown by our local farm partner, Lockbriar Farm! 🥕 A huge thank you to the Maryland Department of Agriculture for making this connection. Being able to take beautiful food grown right here in Maryland, transform it using traditional techniques, and then share that story with the NBC4 audience is pretty darn special.

In this clip, Bill explains why the humble fermented carrot is really the poster child for something much bigger: When we rethink the way we process our food, even the simplest ingredients can become something entirely different.

And if you want to dig deeper, Bill wrote all about it in the latest installment of our Back-to-School Lunch series - including how to make fermented carrot sticks at home.

⭐ SEPTEMBER ROCK STAR: JANE! ⭐

We just celebrated Jane’s three-year anniversary with us, and now we get to celebrate her again as our September Rock Star!

Our Rock Star nominations build month after month, and Jane’s name has continued to show up. This month, all of those nominations added up and put her at the top and when you read what her teammates have to say about her, it’s pretty easy to see why.

Depending on who you are around here, you might know her as Jane, Miss Jane, Mom, Mom-Mom, or Mum Mum. But whatever you call her, you probably know that she is one of the people who keeps Modern Stone Age moving - and keeps all of us on track along the way.

Jane tackles shipping with incredible care, leads the cracker charge every Tuesday, keeps things stocked and organized, jumps in wherever she is needed, and brings an unmistakable spark of energy to everything she does.

But what came through most clearly in her nominations wasn’t just what she does. It was how she makes people feel.

One teammate called her “the light in anyone and everyone’s day.”Another said her laugh is contagious. Her teammates talked about how encouraging and patient she is, how she always has a story to share, and how she genuinely wants to know what’s happening in your life.

And if you’ve ever worked alongside Jane, you know you better be ready to make conversation! She’s going to ask questions, tell you a story, check in on your life, and probably know a whole lot more about you by the time your shift is over. 😂

One nomination summed it up perfectly: “She is most definitely a key to the business in so many ways and we all love her.”

We couldn’t agree more.

And today we got to surprise her with the news while she was, appropriately enough, hard at work on shipping. Even better, her grandson Billy happened to be there too, so we got to make the whole thing a family affair.

Mom, we are so thankful for the energy, love, laughter, stories, and genuine care you bring to this place and the people in it every single week.

Congratulations to our September Rock Star, (my Mom) Jane!❤️

Happy 4-Year Anniversary, Tatyana!

For four years, Tatyana has been such an important part of the Modern Stone Age family - and if you’ve spent any time with us, chances are you know exactly who she is!!

As our Front of House Manager, she is the one making sure everything up front keeps moving - the shelves are stocked, the coffee is hot, the team knows what’s happening, and our customers are taken care of. She somehow knows everyone by name, and it seems like everyone knows Tatyana, too.

She also leads the charge at our Kent Island Farmers Market each week, representing us out in the community and building relationships far beyond our doors here in Chestertown.

And this year, she earned a VERY prestigious honor around here: Barista of the Year for the whole Eastern Shore!!

But more than everything she does, we’re grateful for the energy, consistency, humor, and heart she has brought to our team over these past four years.

Tatyana, thank you for helping keep this crazy place running, for taking such good care of our customers and our team, and for being such an important part of what we’ve built.

Happy 4 years, Tatyana! Here’s to year 5! ❤️

We’re proud to once again sponsor the Washington College Men’s Soccer parent & player lanyards this season!!

As parents of a player ourselves, we know just how useful these are - player names, jersey numbers and parent names all in one place. They make getting to know the team and families so much easier throughout the season.

We also love getting to fuel the team at their home games. On Saturday we kicked things off with a simple sandwich spread after a 3–0 scrimmage win!! Thanks to Zach and Tyler for delivering it!

Of course, having our son Billy on the team makes supporting this exceptional group of young men even more special.

Looking forward to a great season and if you are local - home game at 7pm against Salisbury on Tuesday. BBQ for the after game dinner!!

Happy Birthday, Sherly! 💖

We are so thankful to have Sherly as part of our MSAK team! She is one of those people who helps keep our kitchen moving every single day - always working hard, jumping in wherever she’s needed, keeping things clean and organized, and doing it all with the biggest smile.

Since joining us, Sherly has continued to take on more and more, helping with prep and now learning the line. We love watching her confidence and skills grow, and we’re so excited to see where this next year takes her.

And, of course, birthdays around here come with a dessert request! Sherly chose strawberry shortcake, so Bill made her one with sourdough shortcake, fermented cream, and fresh strawberries. 🍓

Sherly, thank you for your hard work, your positive energy, and everything you bring to our team!! We hope you have the happiest birthday - we’re so lucky to have you! 💖🎉

We may have run out of coppa a little earlier than planned, but August isn’t over yet - so we’re giving our pizza special one last summer twist - Heirloom Tomato White Pizza!

Our 100% wild, long-fermented sourdough crust is topped with extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, sea salt, and our house-made pasta filata cheese, then layered with ripe heirloom tomatoes from Lockbriar Farm and baked in our wood-fired oven.

Finished with fresh ricotta cream made from Nice Farms milk and Red Acres basil.

No complicated toppings needed. Just incredible local tomatoes and basil, traditionally prepared ingredients, and everything made from scratch.

Available through the end of August - or as long as those beautiful heirloom tomatoes keep coming!

It’s back-to-school season, and kitchens everywhere are once again becoming lunch-packing assembly lines.

We remember this season well.

This first photo was from 2010 - the first year all three of our kids headed off to preschool/school together. Three kids. Three backpacks. Three packed lunches.

We thought a lot about what went inside those lunchboxes.

But after raising three kids and packing somewhere around 7,000 school lunches, we’ve learned that the most important ingredient might not actually be in the lunchbox.

Because nourishing our kids is about more than protein, healthy fats and good ingredients.

It’s also about belonging.

It’s about packing food they’ll actually eat. Food that works in the environment where they’re eating it. Food that nourishes them without making them feel like the “weird kid” at the lunch table.

And THAT took us a while to figure out.

As so many families head back to school this week and next, we’re sharing what we learned along the way in our latest blog post: The Most Important Ingredient Isn’t in the Lunchbox!

No perfect-lunchbox pressure. Just lessons from two parents who packed a whole lot of lunches and learned a whole lot along the way.

Happy 3-Year Anniversary to Jane… Miss Jane… Mom… or Mum Mum, depending on who you are around here💗

For the past three years, Jane has been one of those people who keeps so much of Modern Stone Age Kitchen moving behind the scenes.

She keeps our shipping rolling, literally rolls crackers every Tuesday and leads the cracker charge, pops in at the Centreville Farmers Market, and is always willing to jump in wherever she’s needed.

But what makes her so special has nothing to do with any of those jobs. She’s always here with a smile, ready to ask how you’re doing, share a story, have a laugh, and make everyone - customers and team alike - feel genuinely welcome and appreciated.

We are incredibly lucky to have her as part of this crazy family business, and I’m especially lucky that I get to call her Mom. ❤️

Happy 3 years to the woman with about five different names and just as many jobs around here!

Now maybe Year 4 is finally the year we get her into the front of the house. 😉

Love you, Mom!!
