📚About the Book: Girl Gone Wild
The Hollywood Misadventures of a Small-Town Girl
Tales of ambition, delusion, drugs, s*x, and misogyny... including selling T-shirts on the Girls Gone Wild bus
GIRL GONE WILD is a collection of exploits and delusions about chasing your dreams with reckless abandon and what happens when their pursuit becomes a new kind of trap. In this memoir-in-essays, Kocak takes readers along on her heady metamorphosis from girl to woman and from dreamer to professional artist, as she is transformed in this unwitting feminist coming-of-age. It’s a wild, cringeworthy, and often heartbreaking tale, but with Kocak’s wry wit and clear-eyed accounting, it’s nothing short of captivating.

Attention: Parents, caregivers, and artists!! ✨

We are thrilled to host artist and author Rani Ban for an event featuring her debut book: This Is Terrible, This Is Wonderful: Dispatches from the Postpartum Universe. The event will feature a poetry zine workshop for mothers and caretakers, followed by an author meet & greet and book signing.

When: Saturday, June 20th at 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:45 pm)
Where: Three Avenues Bookshop
3009 N Southport Ave
Chicago, IL 60657

About the Event 🧵🪡🗒️🎨
This is Terrible, This is Wonderful is not meant to tidy the complicated postpartum experience, but rather, act as a bridge between how you feel and how you think you should feel. Rani’s hand-written and hand-illustrated essays and poems encapsulate her own journey through new motherhood.

“Nothing about my first year as a human mother unfolded the way I imagined. I had prepared for a baby but I had not prepared for how profoundly uncomfortable I would feel inside of the new life I had hoped for. I felt altered, disoriented and totally unsure of how to inhabit my new role. I quietly navigated waves of grief and doubt while surrounded by messages about ‘bouncing back’ and ‘enjoying this magical time’.” – Rani Ban

To foster the community of parents she hopes This is Terrible, This is Wonderful builds, Rani invites mothers and caretakers to take part in a collective act of creation: folding, stitching, writing, and decorating a low-fi poetry zine together. Each attendee will leave with a small, hand-stitched and hand-written artifact of their own inner life.

Copies of This is Terrible, This is Wonderful will be available for purchase during the event, and participants will have the opportunity to get their books signed by Rani Ban.

📖 About the Book 📖
A portrait of three women connected through one man in the aftermath of his murder—a stunning literary achievement and the explosive and highly anticipated debut novel from beloved award-winning memoirist T Kira Madden.

Birdie Chang didn’t know anything about Whidbey Island when she chose it, only that it was about as far away as she could get from her own life. She’s a woman on the run, desperate for an escape from the headlines back home and the look of concern in her girlfriend’s eyes—and from Calvin Boyer, the man who abused her as a child and who’s now resurfaced. On her way, she has an unnerving encounter with a stranger on the ferry who offers her a proposition, a sinister solution and plan for revenge.

But Birdie isn’t the only girl Calvin harmed back then. There’s also Linzie King, a former reality TV star who recently wrote all about it in her bestselling memoir. Though the two women have never met, their stories intertwine. Once Birdie arrives on Whidbey, she finally cracks the book’s spine, only to find too much she recognizes in its pages. Soon after, on the other side of the country, Calvin’s loving mother, Mary-Beth, receives a shocking phone call from the police: her only son has been murdered.

Calvin’s death sets into motion a series of events that sends each woman on a desperate search for answers. A complex whodunit told from alternating points of view, Whidbey is searingly perceptive and astonishingly original. Exploring the long reach of violence and our flawed systems of incarceration and rehabilitation, this is a tense and provocative debut that’s sure to incite crucial questions about the pursuit of justice and who has real power over a story: the one who lives it, or the one who tells it?

We have another new bookseller in the store! Please join us in welcoming Hailey to the team! 📣📚

Hailey (she/her) has worked in the book publishing industry for 10 years as a marketing and social media specialist. After working from home, she craved more community and was eager to shift to an in-person working position. Three Avenues is the next chapter in her bookish journey! Hailey loves fantasy, translated literature, comics, romance, and literary fiction. Her most recent favorites have been Perfection by Vincenzo Latronico translated by Sophie Hughes and Dungeon Crawler Carl, Book 5: The Butcher’s Masquerade by Matt Dinniman. Hailey lives in Andersonville and you’ll often find her indulging her stationery obsession at Paper and Pencil. A proud Puerto Rican and Chicagoan (she grew up in Wrigleyville), you can identify her by her Chicago flag finger tattoo.

New Bookseller Alert! 📢📚

Meet Sydney (she/her). Sydney is a life-long book lover and resident of the Three Avenues neighborhood! Looking at media and art through a sociopolitical lens, she is always ready with recommendations for books, podcasts, music, movies, & more! She is genre-agnostic but really enjoys reading fantasy, magical realism, romance, feminist literary fiction, and horror. One of Sydney’s favorite reads is The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai. Sydney was an early-adopter of StoryGraph and has a ridiculously long TBR! Outside of Three Avenues, she works in artist and filmmaker development with the documentary company, Kartemquin Films. She has also been taking singing lessons for the last few years, so if you hear someone singing in the store, it’s probably her!

Join us in welcoming Sydney to the team! ❤️👋🏽🎉
