Did Nikola Tesla really sit calmly beside millions of volts of electricity? 😳
In 1899, one of the most famous photographs in scientific history showed Nikola Tesla appearing completely relaxed while huge electrical arcs filled his Colorado Springs laboratory. The image suggests he was casually reading next to around 12 million volts of power.
In reality, the scene was created using double exposure photography. Separate images of Tesla and the lightning discharges were combined to produce the dramatic final picture rather than capturing a single dangerous moment.
The spectacular sparks came from Tesla’s experimental device known as the Magnifying Transmitter, which he used to explore wireless energy transmission at extremely high voltages. He selected Colorado Springs because its high altitude and thinner air allowed electrical currents to travel farther and appear more intense than they would at sea level.
Although Tesla’s dream of worldwide free wireless electricity never fully materialized, the research from these experiments played an important role in the development of modern electrical engineering and wireless communication technologies.
