On This Day: Martin Luther King Jr. Delivers His “I Have a Dream” Speech

On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. At the foot of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his immortal speech, “I Have a Dream.”

With words that still echo through history, King painted a vision of racial equality, justice, and unity. His speech became one of the defining moments of the Civil Rights Movement and helped inspire the passage of landmark legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

King’s dream was bold yet simple: that people would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

On This Day: Bon Appétit! Celebrating Julia Child’s Birthday

On August 15, 1912, Julia Carolyn McWilliams—better known to the world as Julia Child—was born in Pasadena, California. Decades later, she would transform American kitchens by showing that fine cooking didn’t have to be intimidating, and that joy, creativity, and laughter belonged right alongside pots and pans.

Her journey to culinary fame wasn’t a straight line. Julia worked in advertising and even joined the Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to the CIA) during World War II before discovering her passion for food while living in France with her husband, Paul Child.

It was there, in Paris, that Julia enrolled in the legendary Le Cordon Bleu cooking school. She studied under master chefs, absorbing classic French techniques with a determination that would later shape her career. Together with collaborators Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, she co-wrote Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961)—a book that became an instant classic and gave American home cooks the confidence to tackle soufflés, boeuf bourguignon, and more.

On This Day: Honoring Arctic Explorer Matthew Henson

On August 8, 1866, Matthew Alexander Henson was born in Nanjemoy, Maryland. Though history long overlooked his contributions, Henson was a true trailblazer—a skilled navigator, craftsman, and the first African American Arctic explorer.

Over the course of nearly 23 years, Henson participated in seven grueling Arctic expeditions alongside explorer Robert Peary, spending over 18 years in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. Most notably, Henson was a key member of the 1908–1909 expedition that claimed to have reached the geographic North Pole on April 6, 1909.

Though Peary received much of the glory, Henson’s contributions were critical—and today, his name is finally recognized alongside the great explorers of history.
