Tourism in Chicago is up and I have had so many tourists come into the shop this year and want to fish legally in our Great Lake and I have to tell them I can not sell you a fishing license. If you live in another country, you do not have a social. Duh! How about the students that are here on visas going to school. Sorry no social no license! I hate having to turn away anyone, especially the younger generation from going out fishing. Up until this year we were able to use their passport, Visa or non US drivers license to sell them one. I know a lot of you will go into the legal/ illegal persons but that’s not what this is about. Please look at the bigger picture. 1- it will definitely hurt the IDNR revenue and that will create cuts. I feel a lot of that will be in the stocking of salmon and trout. My shop is already down by about 25% in license sales and I am just 1 place that sells fishing and hunting licenses. 2- if you care about your fishing and hunting rights take a look into Oregons Initiative Petition 28 (IP28) or the PEACE Act, this is just what 1 state was trying to do. I have seen issues arise and when not dealt with ASAP the anglers always lose. With all the BS going on in our city, state, country, and the world in general I ask “why should anyone be denied to legally enjoy a sport that helps you relax and rewind?”
And yes, to be clear Social Security numbers have been needed for many years to purchase fishing and hunting licenses but we were able to sell fishing and hunting licenses to visiting non US citizens with a passport or visa, which as of January 1, 2026, cannot be done.
