I hate to be the guy who ONLY posts about new acquisitions at the shop, but heck! we’ve been getting a lot of cool stuff in lately! This week we received a huge run of vintage fan magazines from the 80’s & early 90’s, mostly Amazing Heroes and The Comics Journal. There are fantastic covers by McFarlane, Stevens, Hughes, Sienkiewicz and others, PLUS interviews and articles on nearly every creator, publisher or series of the era! Most issues will be priced and available later this week - stop by anytime!!!

Another collection arrived this week consisting of more than 500 classic Silver Age comics! Heavy on DC titles (Adventure, Action, Superman, JLA, Wonder Woman, Batman), it also includes a ton of fantastic Dell and Gold Key movie, TV and superhero issues (just a handful of which are shown here), plus a smattering of 60’s Marvels. In Chicago for Flashback Weekend? Why not visit Atlas Comics to browse 75,000 vintage comics and magazines, including hundreds of horror, sci-fi and nerd-media related titles! We are located only three miles from the Rosemont Convention Center, just off of the Kennedy Expressway (I-90) and a short walk from the Harlem Avenue CTA Blue Line train station. Exactly 40 years ago this season (my fourth summer as a comic shop owner) my new release racks were choked with parodies of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the runaway juggernaut of what become known as the black and white publishing boom of the 1980’s. No one (especially me!) could have predicted that the Turtles - themselves more or less a parody of the Batman and Daredevil comics of the era - would blossom into a multi-generational, multi-media powerhouse that still thrives today. Just a handful of the awesome new arrivals that have walked through our doors in recent days! While those Spider-Man issues are gorgeous, the early pre-hero Nintendo issues from Valiant Comics (circa 1990) are so rarely seen that they are the star of the shop at the moment! New to Atlas Comics today: the first issue of Wizard Magazine, the king of 1990’s fan culture! Featuring an interview with another 90’s icon, Todd McFarlane, this copy is a solid VF minus, with the centerfold poster AND the subscription and survey cards still intact. So interesting to see what Wizard eventually became from this humble beginning!

I always love seeing unusual comic artist / inker team-ups, like Jack Kirby inked by Barry Smith (Captain America’s bicentennial Battles) or Frank Miller and Wally Wood (Daredevil #164’s cover). But until recently I had forgotten all about this strange one: from a Captain Atom story in The Charlton Bullseye #2, we have Steve Ditko inked by John Byrne. This was the Spring of 1975, and both men were toiling in the Charlton comics sweatshop; Byrne’s career was just catching fire and Ditko’s gradually fading to embers. They made a very entertaining pairing, with Ditko still putting solid work in on the pencils and JB tightening the loose ends that Steve sometimes left to the inkers at this stage of his career. Very fun stuff!
