The 18th-century Carlo Testore violin was crashed in a motorcycle accident. The violin belongs to Catalin Ungureanu, Principal First Violin of Opera Australia, and it was brought from Sydney to me for restoration by a mutual friend, Paul Ghica. Last week, Catalin flew from Sydney to Chicago to pick up his beloved violin and said he could send a carrier, but he would like to meet me in person. I was deeply moved that Cat took such a long and tiresome flight to meet me.

Hiding wolf notes by manipulating tailgut length
One can never fully eliminate the wolf notes, but they can be minimized; sometimes a wolf can be hidden between notes by manipulating tailgut length.

Why does too much soundpost adjustment harm instruments?

1) Although sound-post adjustment can be used to optimize the sound, including minimizing wolf notes, if it is not necessary, don’t do it. Doing sound-post adjustment too often is bad for instruments because spruce (the top) is very soft.
2) Sometimes sound can be made better without soundpost adjustment.
3) When one travels in the car, lay the case flat and upward on the seat, not on its side, to prevent soundpost movement.
