Considered among the best of the 20th century American makers, Franz Kinberg was born in Serbia and studied with Lajos Kain in Zrenjanin from 1937-39. He then worked for several shops over the next decade, including Franz Schneider in Zagreb, Remenyi in Budapest, and Hofmann & Czerny in Vienna. Kinberg left for the U.S. in 1949, the same year he won the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Contemporary Violin Making at The Hague. Kinberg was employed by Kagan and Gaines in Chicago until his retirement in 1982.

His instruments have been owned by the distinguished concertmasters Mischa Mischakoff and Sidney Harth as well as Milton Preves, longtime principal violist of the Chicago Symphony. His violas in particular are quite rare and extremely sought after.

We have the pleasure of offering a fine violin by Joseph Rocca as well as a fine violin modeled after Joseph Rocca made by Evasio Guerra. Pressenda and Rocca are revered as the two greatest Turin makers and of the two, Rocca is less often copied, making this Rocca model quite unique. Guerra well understood the Rocca model—as evidenced by this fine violin—which was illustrated in Dmitry Gindin’s book, “The Modern Italian Violin Makers.”

This stunning bench copy by Antoine Nédélec & Jeffrey Phillips captures the character and quality of the historic 1735 ‘Sennhauser’ Guarneri ‘del Gesù’ in a remarkable way. We know of few craftspeople in the world with both the technical and artistic ability to create such a faithful, true bench copy. Bravo, Antoine and Jeffrey!
