WasteNot Partner Spotlight: Food Shed Co-op 🛒

The Food Shed Co-Op has not only composted over 30,000 pounds of food scraps with WasteNot since opening in 2024, but now is a community drop-off host for our McHenry County compost network in partnership with Environmental Defenders!

♻️ A new campus composting initiative starts Friday, Sept. 4! ♻️
Collect your food scraps, coffee grounds, and other organic waste at home each week and bring them to the compost collection site at the Illini Union! 🍑🍇🍐🍅🥑

🔶 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays
🔷 Anniversary Plaza (Quad side of the Illini Union)

✳️ Everyone is welcome to participate or stop by to talk with our student EcoReps about composting! This pilot project is open to all members of the campus community.

is an eco-friendly way to dispose of organic waste, which can be used as fertilizer to support soil health. And diverting organic waste from landfills avoids greenhouse gas emissions. 🌎

What happens to WasteNot’s retired buckets? We get a beach vacation 🏖️☀️

You may have seen our buckets all over Montrose Beach recently as part of an ultimate frisbee tournament. A long-time member reached out to our team to see if we could help him create the boundaries for the tournament. We were happy to help!

After our buckets have lived fulfilling lives helping keep food waste out of landfills, they deserve a little beach vacation 🏝️

Thank you to the Illinois Recycling Foundation (Illinois Recycling Foundation) for awarding WasteNot the 2026 Outstanding Public-Private Partnership Award for our partnership with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office (Cook County Sheriff Official)!

Our partnership provided collection and diversion of food waste from the Cook County Jail kitchen and returned finished compost to Sherriff Tom Dart’s Urban Farming Program.

WasteNot’s CEO, Liam Donnelly, accepted the award at the Illinois Circularity Conference last week in Tinley Park.

WasteNot Compost is proud to be the new exclusive compost collection hauler for the !

The Village of Orland Park is partnering with WasteNot Compost to provide a curbside compost collection service option for all residential properties within Village boundaries.

Starting today, residents can sign up for exclusive service pricing and receive their first buckets to start composting with WasteNot. Participation is optional.

“We are excited to partner with WasteNot to bring an eco-friendly, convenient composting solution to Orland Park,” said Mayor Jim Dodge. “This program reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability, making it easier than ever for our residents, schools and local businesses to reduce landfill waste.”
