“Excavation of Movement” is a collaboration between The Art Institute of Chicago, The Joffrey Ballet, and The Canopy at 900 North Michigan. The piece explores movement in Willem de Kooning’s artwork, with Joffrey dancers Coco Alvarez-Mena and Zachary Manske performing in front of “Excavation” (1950). It runs in parallel with “Willem de Kooning Drawing,” on view through September 20, and is now playing on The Canopy, curated by Zac Hall.
From director and Canopy resident artist Adrian Stein: “Abstract Expressionism is an embodied record of action, a history of raw decision-making and of the limits of the artist’s reach. If Abstract Expressionism is a record of movement, what happens when we turn it around and let the record become direction for movement?”
