Located just down the hall from us at the Bridgeport Art Center, Project Onward is a nonprofit studio and gallery that supports artists with developmental and mental disabilities by providing professional studio space, resources, and exhibition opportunities. Their work is exceptional, and we encourage everyone to stop by and experience it.

As we explored antique maps, prints, and posters together, the artists noticed patterns, details, and visual stories that many of us might have overlooked. Their observations sparked great conversations and reminded us that every work of art can be seen through a different lens.

If you're planning to visit us during the Bridgeport Art Center's Third Friday Open Studios, be sure to make time for Project Onward as well. Their gallery is open alongside the building's many artists' studios and exhibitions, making it one of the highlights of the evening. We hope to welcome them back to New World Cartographic again soon!

With the Strait of Hormuz dominating the headlines, the geography shown here feels remarkably familiar.

This 1958 World Oil – Middle East Oil Map lays out the early framework of pipelines, fields, and concessions that would define how oil was developed and exported from the region. It notes key shared interests, including Kharg Island and the Iran Pan American (IPAC) concession, a 50/50 partnership between Pan American (Standard of Indiana) and the National Iranian Oil Company.

Seen today, this map reads less like a snapshot in time and more like the foundation of the modern oil network.

This remarkable and rare double-hemisphere world map by Jacob Aertz Colom is significant not only for its geography, but for its bold visual embrace of the new astronomy. Produced in the mid-17th century, it stands among the earliest printed world maps to prominently illustrate the Copernican system at a time when heliocentrism remained controversial and, in some regions, doctrinally suspect. In doing so, the map transforms the traditional decorative world image into a statement about humanity’s evolving understanding of the cosmos.
