Hello everyone,
We hope you, your families, and friends are healthy, and remain vibrant during these difficult and strange times.

As you can imagine, nothing about this ordeal has made anything easier for OOM, considering that after our campaign fell short of its goal we had an investor commitment which quickly ended up on shaky legs from divided visions, and regrettably divisive actions at the shop. We had hoped something could be figured out, but surely the above, coupled with the shutdown, has delivered a quite conclusive verdict for the time being.

We are unspeakably sad to announce that there’s no choice but to shutter the shop at this juncture, as ownership and management cannot continue to cover the shop’s losses, nor ask for patrons to bear more weight of supporting Odd Obs in a volunteer-staffed iteration which has proven to not be sustainable for the bulk of the store’s 16+ year existence.

There is hope with the caveat of having generous storage options, that the collection can go into hibernation while our world gradually settles into its new normal, and possibly have a not-too-distant-future-life in partnership with more profitable entities.

Please reach out with any questions, thoughts, as well as campaign or membership related concerns to: membership at oddobsession dot com (written this way to avoid spam).

Unsurprisingly we are closed until further notice, we have decided this based on that we obviously don’t want anyone to fall ill from gathering at our shop, nor do we want our volunteers and their families/friends to be in any danger. Even though this is a time that movies are surely a perfect reprieve, until we figure out an alternative this has to be the solution for the time-being.

Thank you for understanding, wishing you health and happiness in these strange times.

Also late associated fees will be waived.

Please join us for the screenings of ‘At The Video Store’ and Gene Siskel Film Center this weekend! We are excited to be featured in this documentary that is part of the Siskel’s ‘Stranger than Fiction’ documentary series. Director James Westby worked on this doc for seven years and filmed us in action at our old location!

Volunteers from Odd Obs will be tabling at both screenings, come out and show your support and talk to real live video clerks!

Screenings at
Fri Jan 24th 8:30 pm
Sat Jan 25th 5:30pm
Reception Saturday 8pm at Odd Obs

After the Saturday screening will be be hosting Westby for a reception in our store. Chat about ‘At The Video Store,’ at the video store. Come celebrate with us, have a glass of wine, a little popcorn, and pick up a rental to take home.

Read more about ‘At the Video Store’ from the Chicago Tribune:

‘Director James Westby’s documentary about the subculture of the independently owned video store (near extinct these days) grabbed my attention because of its focus on the sense of community that exists in these defiantly non-corporate spaces. Yes, there are the pleasures of browsing and holding movies as tangible things in your hands. But Westby seems most taken with the idea that it’s important to talk about these movies with one another in person. That there’s a social aspect to it.

Chicago’s Odd Obsession is briefly featured here. Facets gets a passing mention. New City film critic Ray Pride talks about the pleasures of being able to hold a tangible thing, as opposed to interacting with “a bunch of pixels shunted through the internet."’

See you there!

hey folks, its a new year, its a new decade, its a new you. its time to become the (movie) person you want to be and so we have three new recommended sections to inspire some avenues you could explore. we got snow movies for when Chicago inevitably freezes over until May or so. we got nuclear anxiety movies because you never know whats gonna happen when the keys to the biggest arsenal on the planet are in the hands of an impulsive child. and in honor of a certain substance getting legalized and to maybe come down from all that nuclear anxiety we have a section of films best enjoyed in a certain state of mind. very open to your suggestions on all these so please come on in and visit!

The year is 2020, and we are celebrating the Future History of the Elephant 6 collective by entering a rare VHS into our rental collection.
Copy 15 of 38 was retired from the Elephant 6 Video Rental Club, a write-in only video rental club that was previously the only way to view this documentary about the ground breaking and highly influental recording company, Elephant 6 Recording Co.
Director C.B. Stockfelth gifted us a copy to make available to Chicago.
